“Lovely hotel, but disappointing room”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We stayed here for one night and thought the staff, hotel and grounds were beautiful. However, we were disappointed with the room. We were in room 23 and thought the furniture and decor where quite dated, more like the 70's style and there was no air conditioning in the room. We could also here the man in the next room snoring and people walking around upstairs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the original building upstairs.

We stayed here very recently and were extremely impressed by the sheer beauty of this magnificent building and grounds. We were not disappointed by our room which was comfortable with every facility and, as an added bonus, a splendid view over the manicured lawns. Service was good and the stay was well worth the rate which we paid.

Just returned from a weekend at Stonehouse Court. Filled with trepidation on reading mixed reviews but so pleased we went. Yes, the hotel is old .... but, but, BUT the staff without exception were excellent, the food was seriously good (can recommend the chicken livers and lamb) so what more could you ask for ? Each time a member of staff saw us they immediately asked if there was anything we needed ......how often does that happen in a hotel these days ? Full marks to Stonehouse Court .

Room Tip: We stayed in room 10 in the main building which overlooks the gardens without any adjoining rooms so...

Hello PatsieAnn,

What a wonderfully kind review and we are so grateful for your positive feedback!

The staff here do indeed work very hard so as to ensure our guests have a relaxing and pleasant stay and they pride themselves in warm and genuinely attentive service. I am delighted that you experienced this first hand after reading historical reviews and even more so that you took the time to write these words as they mean a lot to the staff and are very encouraging.

The team have indeed moved on from the days where negative reviews were simply accepted and now in the last 10 months we are in a much better position as a team to welcome consistently good reviews.

Kind regards,

Michael and Team

We stayed at Stonehouse Court last week with a Groupon deal, which made it really very good value. The food was delicious and the staff very attentive and polite. We upgraded to one of the rooms in the main building and it was super! It was enormous with all that we needed.

There were parts of the room and the hotel which do need tidying up and sorting out - we got the impression that things weren't quite as 'done up' as they could be. So, don't expect perfection but if you're happy with that (as we were) then you'll be very pleased with this place. It is lovely!

Room Tip: The main house room we stayed in was super!

Dear sophie_matters,

Thanks for your kind words. It is lovely to hear how much you enjoyed your Groupon stay with us and as you say, what great value for money especially as Groupon Guests were all treated to the full a la carte menu to boot.

You will be pleased to know we have already planned in the next phase of the refurbishment so the last areas which you rightly say need touching up will get the full TLC treatment.

Kind regards,

Michael and Team

We were a large group that stayed over for a birthday celebration. We all enjoyed our stay and found the staff very friendly and accommodating, it can be very challenging with a large group and the team coped very well.
We stayed for dinner and we found the standard very good, although the menu may be a bit restricting for vegetarians. The breakfast was delicious, very good with various choices for most people. It would be a lovely venue for a wedding as the grounds are pretty, the best thing for us was that the hotel allowed well behaved dogs to stay. We booked 6 bedrooms, the style and quality of the décor was varied but all were comfortable and clean. We would definitely stay here again if in the area. We did venture into Stroud on the Sunday and found most of the shops closed, so probably not the best time to go for a potter.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 2, with a lovely view over the back lawns. It was large and comfortable with a rea...

Dear Lesley E,

I am so pleased to hear we made your special occasion such an enjoyable experience for the entire party! I hear what you are saying about vegetarians however I assure you that there are always more than three choices for vegetarian requests on any given day so the menu does not quite reflect the willingness and diversity of what chef is prepared to do over and above the menu when requested. I am pleased however to learn that it did not detract in any way from your overall experience.

You are absolutely correct in saying the hotel and stunning grounds make for a perfect wedding venue. We are very fortunate to be able to offer Brides and Grooms a fantastic location with consistently warm and attentive service similar to that which you experienced.

I hope you will visit us soon and if so please do take us up on the offer of a selection of vegetarian dishes - you will not be disappointed!

Kind regards,

Michael and Team

The hotel is a converted 17th century manor house with a very tasteful extension. The grounds are well cared for and there is a nice walk at the bottom along the Stroud canal - it was a pity that the church at the end of the grounds was not open.
On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and helpful (as were all of the the staff subsequently) and since our room was some way from the reception told us to leave our bags and they would be brought to the room.
The accommodation was o.k. The bathroom a little bit dated and the taps to control the shower in the bath were very awkward to manage.
One down point was the noise as the hotel room doors closed (fire prevention) - you could hear the clap from rooms far away.
The food in the restaurant was excellent and good value for money, the service helpful and cheerful.
The breakfast was also very good quality, although the service at breakfast was not as good as in the evening, and the empty tables were left with unfinished food and plates - not very elegant.
All in all a very enjoyable stay - a few little things to be improved and then this would get the 5* rating.
The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful

This hotel was built in the 17th century with a few additions. It overlooks Stroud water canal. I intended to hire a bike to cycle along the canal but the weather wasn't good. There is a cycle hire shop nearby. Perhaps the hotel could think about doing this.It would also be a nice walk along the canal.
The staff were really good and we appreciated the receptionist upgrading are room as I was with my elderly mother.
We travelled into Stroud but what a disappointment really rundown and we struggled to find a restaurant.
