“Perfection In the Heart Of the Forest Of Dean”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

This hotel manages to be picture postcard perfect whilst at the same time having a completely relaxed atmosphere. The hotel was a former working farm and set in 14 acres of idyllic land to explore. I received a warm welcome from the very attentive staff and was shown to room 23 which I can thoroughly recommend. After a long journey I could feel myself instantly relax in the well appointed room. The bathroom has a huge roll top bath and spacious monsoon shower. The room itself has Nespresso machine, flat screen TV, DVD player, free wireless internet, mini bar, dressing gowns, white company products......I could have spent the weekend in the room relaxing. I was in the heart of great countryside which for me meant long walks and a bit of sight seeing. Food in the restaurant is exemplary and not to be missed. The owners Colin and Hari Fell are as professional as they are affable. I can see why this place has won awards and will be coming back again for a break in the country. I'd recommend it in a heart beat.

Room Tip: All rooms look great but I loved the Cider House rooms.

Celebrated a family birthday with an overnight stay at the Tudor Farmhouse. Superb room, the height of luxury with nice touches, such as fresh milk in the fridge, good quality tea for my morning cuppa and a coffee machine. Splendid evening meal and breakfast, and I was very pleased to see their extensive list of local suppliers. Fully recommended and well worth a visit.

We stayed here because our friends were getting married in Clearwell Castle. We were told it was a 5 minute walk and it was.We could spend an hour trying to find fault but honestly there wasn't one.We were able to get ready in our room in the junior barn at our leisure. The room was absolutely spotless and really lovely.I didn't expect dressing gowns, white company toiletries and home made biscuits for the price we paid.It is classy, though unpretentious, friendly though efficient and really, absolutely lovely. We are returning for one of their dinner,b&b deals, just because...

Room Tip: There are ground floor rooms if needed. If our room had not been ready,we were told we could have use...

We booked this hotel as we were going to a friends wedding in clearwell castle. It's a great location for the Castle as its only minutes walk round the corner to the castle. We arrived quite early on the Saturday morning and we were allowed to check in at 11.30 this was great as we had time to go and get some lunch and then get ready for the wedding at 2. We only booked a basic room the junior barn room, when I rang to book I was advises this was the cheapest room and the best value if just staying over for a wedding. The room was lovely, it has very high we needed including free wifi, no codes needed as the box was in the room. The room had lots of character, it was great. There was a hair dryer, tv on the wall, tea and coffee making with biscuits. The bathroom was big with a corner jacuzzi bathtub, the room and the bathroom were spotlessly clean and the entire hotel was all kept to the best standards possible. We stayed for breakfast in the morning, this was also great, it was a lovely touch that they named the location of each of the foods on the menu, the apple juice was amazing! The restaurant itself was spacious and well layed out. The next great thing is that we asked for a late checkout and as we had booked the Sunday lunch for 2 we were allowed to check out at 2, this was really good after a full day and night of drinking at the wedding the day before. The Sunday lunch was lovely too with the very best produce used. I would definitely go back again it was worth the few hours drive down just for that cosy little hotel. If you are thinking but it I would not hesitate. If you can I would try to book the loft it's a separate little building with a private gate and gain just for you, it's an amazing room!!

Room Tip: The loft looked amazing, I would ask for a room on the first floor

Dear lovestoholiday12
Thanks for the lovely write-up. Glad you appreciated the early check in to get ready for the wedding and the late check out to recover! The area has loads to offer besides weddings so it would be great to welcome you back when you fancy a slightly more relaxing stay!
Kind regards

Great hotel and restaurant. Smart and professional at all times but with a really down to earth and friendly feel - fabulous! Can't wait to be back. We stayed in the loft which was a great room with an excellent spacious bathroom.

We did book to stay 2 nights but at 2.30am of the second night my wifes water broke so we had to leave immediately and drive to Gloucester Hospital. Our room was an ok size, the TV was very small and placed too high on the wall but the bathroom was great and the bed was comfy and I liked the Nespresso coffee machine. The food at the restaurant was very good though.

This quaint hotel found in the valley village of Clearwell is in a glorious location. Located in the forest with all types of wild life including wild bore it is great for walking holidays or days out in Ross-on-Wye or Chepstow. Being so near to the Welsh border you will experience both cultures and with the friendly staff you will have relaxing time away with great food which is locally sourced- and some delicious locally grown white wine. It's a must!
