Description: A very warm welcome to the Butchers Arms. One of the oldest pubs in the Forest of Dean, we have been welcoming locals and visitors alike since 1802. Our menu combines signature 'Butchers' dishes with traditional British favourites, our modern recipes and grills are all prepared by Head Chef Matt Wheeler and his team from the freshest ingredients. Wherever possible we will endeavour to provide produce from local suppliers so you can truly have a taste of the Forest of Dean. We pride ourselves in providing good quality food, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere. All our food is cooked fresh to order, so please allow a little time for service. We look forward to seeing you. Matt and Scott Directors

“Good food and service”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

We visited on recommendation and were not disappointed. The service was really good, the staff very friendly and cheerful but not constantly pestering you. The food was delicious. Big portions but not so much that you over ate. All nicely presentated and excellent value for money. What more can I say!

“The Butchers Arms”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

This is an olde worlde establishment, plenty of beams and stone walls, it is very much given over to food, it does have a bar with some good real ales but you can't sit at a table as they are all set out for food. The menu is quite good it is the plenty of it/could not finish it style of cooking which suits some but I prefer a bit less bulk and more attention to detail. The service is a bit haphazard and not that welcoming, you never see a landlord or mien host type of person, its all young staff who do OK but seem to lack a coordinator. A lot of the time the bar is not staffed and waitresses seem to disappear back into the kitchen or somewhere, it seems understaffed, we have eaten there 3 times and its always OK but not quite 100%b

“I'm still full and smiling three weeks later!”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

Whilst staying at Forest Holidays in the Forest of Dean we were struggling to find a well recommended and reasonably priced restaurant nearby. I came across The Butchers Arms by chance and we certainly weren't disappointed! The staff were friendly and on a weekday evening it was quiet inside- we even had a side room (through an arch way) to ourselves. We each had three courses on the Mid Week Treat specials menu which was great value. My only complaint would be that my belly just was not big enough to fit everything in! The starters (soup, pate and mushrooms) were all lovely and hot. The pie's we each had for mains were HUGE and served with a massive portion of chips, peas and a gravy boat. Even my 18 year old, never-stops-eating brother couldn't finish his! But it tasted so good it was difficult to know when to stop! Finally were the desserts. Not enough chocolate based options for my liking (as a total chocoholic) so I settled on ice cream and was given a choice of 3 flavours (of course choosing one of each!). Lemon Tart and Sticky Toffee Pudd were chosen by other members of my group and each go highly recommended! Service was paced nicely and there was a really relaxed atmosphere inside this English Country Pub. A teenager, 2 young adults and 2 middle aged parents all happy, relaxed and stuffed! Should we be nearby again we shall certainly be going back!

“Lovely anniversary meal”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We went here on a recommendation from the cottage where we stayed and we were not disappointed. It's in a lovely quiet location, very nicely decorated and the food was delicious. The service was great too. The toilets were first class, like a very nice hotel rather than a country pub.

“A super meal”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

I've eaten here twice so far this month and both times the food has been faultless. They cater very well for vegetarians and the food is of very high quality. Will definitely return soon!
