“Great Break”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

Just returned from a much needed 2 day break staying at the excellent Crown Inn located in a lovely cotswold stone village. Everything about the stay was superb. The room was great with the decor perfectly adequate for such an old establishment. Furthermore it was very warm and serviced very well. All in all the room facilities were marvellous. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the barman. Although the first night was quiet in the bar, the second night was much busier and we had some good interaction with local people. Both beer and food were excellent. It is a dog friendly place but not overly so. We took two of ours but they didn't share the room with us (there are limits!) We had a superb walk through the Northwick and Batsford estates taking in a wonderful view of Batsford manor and also skirting the Batsford Arboretum. The other pub in the village also served good beer whilst the vibrant Village shop/post office/cafe, served great coffee and home made cake. Thanks to all at the Crown - we will go again!

Room Tip: We were given rm 11 which fronted the high st - no problems at all

If you have a dog you are given an annexed room where the door leads direct to the outside, this would be fine if the room size allowed you to "swing a cat" , the shower was a poor electric one, no volume no heat, and no hot water from the tap in a closet that was supposed to be the bathroom. The barman was nice.

Room Tip: Get one inside the hotel and a recommendation from the receptionist that he/she would stay in it

We had a welscome for our 1 night stay. Our room had an outsdide door and was a good size. Dogs can only stay in rooms with direct outside access which makes good sense. Our room was built in the same charming stone as the rest of the village. We did 2 good walks from the Hotel

Oh top marks for a relaxed check out time

We were looking forward to a restful couple of days in Gloucester. Upon arrival we noticed the rather dated decor but the young lady on reception was friendly and helpful. We were given a room directly opposite the main fire door entrance to most of the other bedrooms and directly over the bar. The floor sloped so much as did the bed, that my husband was on the edge of the bed most of the night and the pillows were rock hard. Food in restaurant not very good as pasta must have had a weeks salt put into the one meal by mistake, couldn't manage most of it. Next morning, there were problems with a leak from one of the bathrooms into the bar and a man knocked on the door at 8.30am asking if he could check our bathroom and had we put shower curtain inside the bath before having a shower! He then disappeared. We returned to the hotel about 3.00 as tired after previous nights poor sleep and was having a snooze and husband lying on bed reading his paper when same gentleman used a pass key and came into room! He apologised but then asked if he could once again check the bathroom for leak. He then proceeded to dismantle the toilet!! By this time my husband had had enough and went to reception to ask for a change of room which we were given with no hesitation by the pleasant receptionist. New room was much better, no noise and bed on a level. We realise that this is an old coaching house and the floors will slope etc but surely the beds could be levelled off, the pillows comfortable and the food palatable. It's a real shame as Blockley is a lovely village and an ideal location as a base when visiting Gloucester. Customer care needs to be given attention and one last comment nearly £10 per person for breakfast is rather expensive for individuals who only eat cereal and toast. We went to the delightful post office/ store just down the raod and had toast and coffee, very good and £7.60 for two. I am afraid we will not be returning.

Set in a beautiful village and the drive in was very scenic. Lovely friendly staff upon arrival who explained everything we needed to know and showed us to our room which was directly across from reception.
Our room was like our own little swiss chalet!! Very large comfy bed, great range of refreshments, pristinely white lovely heavy cotton towels, very in-keeping style furniture & tolietries in the bathroom.
We went to the bar in the evening and enjoyed a bar meal which was delicious and very reasonable. We chose to give the restaurant a miss as it seemed a bit pricey, however I think the food would have been worth it going by what we had in the bar. The locals were very friendly and welcomed us into their local which was lovely!
Gorgeous, hot & powerful shower. We had a great night's sleep as it was so peaceful there. Also considering they allow pets our room did not smell like animals were allowed (as usually I would completely avoid booking where pets are allowed from previous bad experience!).
Would definitely recommend!

The hotel is in a beautiful village, typically English although very quiet but some good walks. Rooms are a good size, curtains rather thin and the bed small and uncomfortable. Good shower and towels and mug for tea. Thought it was a bit steep for £100 a night but breakfast was good. I would recommend and return but only for a night.

As the majority of other reviewers have mentioned the hotel is a little worn and would benefit greatly from both investment and time. Investment in updating the fittings/furniture and time to check things like the dingy light in our bathroom (25watt made for a gloomy shower) and shaver light not working, but these are the only negative points. Our stay was enjoyable because the staff are great. The General Manager was hugely efficient, the dining room runs like clockwork when he is around. Nothing is too much trouble. The food was great, we really enjoyed it (Great Cod & Chips - the lightest of batter) The locals were friendly in the bar, the fire was blazing. I understand it is early days for the manager who is reasonably new to this hotel, but he has a great attitude and given time I'm sure he will succeed in returning this hotel's reputation to it's glory days. Have to mention that Denise on Reception is a treasure, we had to chop and change our booking and she was very helpful and accommodating with this. She is a genuinely helpful, warm and friendly first impression and this should never be underestimated.

Room Tip: Room 24 has a separate seating area or second space for extra beds.
