Description: The Air Balloon was originally two ale houses and provided for the needs of the travellers before the days of licensing. Many Balloon ascents were made from about 1784 onwards, and one Walter Powell ascended from Malmesbury and disapppeared without trace about that time. No evidence is recorded, however that he landed here! The Inn was next known as The Balloon in 1796 and recorded as the Air Balloon in 1802. It was owned as a part of Cowley Manor Estate until the early 20th Century. Current owners Greeneking acquired the Air Balloon in January 2004, after having a refurbishment in 2010 the character and charm is still catering for the needs of todays traveller, and is a busy stop off point for all walks of life. There is a very busy car park which can be used, therefore ensuring that all customers can park. We also have a new meeting room that can sit 8-30 people.

Stopped for Sunday lunch with a group of friends. All ordered one after another in couples at the till and before we had all sat back down three of the roasts had come out. Not a good start! Two had cold Yorkshire puddings and all the meat was either overcooked or more probably over- microwaved. The roast was meant to come with potatoes and mash. There was precisely two spuds and half a spoonful of mash. The carrots that we thought were al dente could of in fact been of more use for hammering nails in. The staff were less than helpful and quite frankly rude when challenged on the timings and standard of the food. My first review ever so not a serial complainer. Would not recommend to anyone.

Always stop here for lunch on the way to my daughter's.
Lovely old world pub and have always enjoyed the food and good choice of real ales - Greene King mostly.
Visited on Xmas Eve lunchtime and it was not too busy so were quickly seated and food was served promptly. I had beef and ale pie which comes as quite a large portion, my wife had cod loin which she enjoyed and son had the beef burger as usual.

Would not go back again ,as the food was not at all nice I had a gammon ,it wasn't at all tender good job they gave me a sharp knife ,the rest of the family had Sunday dinners, that to me looked like children's dinners.
Wouldn't go back ,and defiantly wouldn't recommend.

We had Sunday lunch here 12pm. Service was outstanding but the food was appalling. Roast dinner consisted of bought in rubbish meat, packet mash, hard carrots, hard peas. The fish and chips for adults and children was anything but award winning. It was overcooked - hard and crunchy not light and crispy batter. The icecream was rubbish too. No point in saying anything at the time about the food as it was all bought in, nothing made fresh, nothing any serving staff could do about that. Owner/Manager to think about new supplier and new chef!

We had a quick Saturday lunchtime stop here, en route to Cirencester. We had to park our car in the overflow car park - the places was packed and we got what appeared to be the last table in the house! The pub is an Old English Inn, part of the Greene King stable, a pub chain which I rate very highly. Their staff are well-trained, the properties are lovely and the menu is varied. We had their 'special deal' Haddock and Chips, which arrived in good time bearing in mind how busy they were. Batter was a little overcooked and my husband's had quite a few bones in it. The comment from the waitress was that they 'come already battered' so there's nothing they can do about it, only indicates the standard of food offered here - off a freezer lorry. However, they offer a large menu and maintain good standards, so I suppose this is how you do it.

Good range of Greene King ales - a beautiful pint of Abbot Ale was served to my husband, whereas I am 'sparkling water woman', therefore easy to please!

The pub is really well situated on the main road junction of Birdlip Hill.
