“Warm and friendly”
Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

With a tranquil view of a calm sea, blue skies and fluttering birds from our room at glen eagles, we were delighted. this was enhanced with a warm welcome and tasty breakfast next day. The bed room was clean and bed massively wide. Everything we had hoped for. Many thanks.

Dear DiPiSouthampton

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are all glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We would like to think our hard work led to the blue skies and the tide being in but sadly we cant . We are however pleased that we provided a warm welcome ,a big bed and a good breakfast of which we source much of the produce locally.
We hope to see you again soon

We stayed on the top floor overlooking the sea which was nice as the weather was excellent. While the room was small it was clean and met our needs.

The guesthouse is in a very good location overlooking the sea and is a very short walk into Southend centre. The breakfast was very good quality as was the service. Good value for money in my opinion.

Our stay here was OK. We only stayed one night, which was a blessing since the double room we had should really have been a single room and the shower was appalling, would have had a better shower under a leaky drainpipe. Would have been too small for a longer stay. I had booked a double without a sea view, though very kindly, since they had one available we were given a view. Though you would need to be pretty fit to get up to the top floor.

Had we have been travelling on our own the room would probably have sufficed, even though it was a tad tired looking. I understand the owners, only bought the Guesthouse a year ago and are gradually renovating.

A relative travelling on their own booked a suite with sea view. He paid £65. We paid £70 (i.e. £35 each), however the Gleneagles price structure is priced by the room and they would have had occupancy in both rooms. The suite my relative stayed in had been newly renovated, was very spacious and have a second room with two single beds in it. Go figure!

My husband and I paid an extra £5 for a pokey, un-renovated room in the eaves (I stress for two people), while my relative paid £65 for a two roomed suite (on his own).

Then to make matters worse, after we had paid and checked out, I found that the Gleneagles website were advertising 'small' double rooms for £55. I think they must have seen us coming! But they certainly won't be seeing us come back!!!

The other odd thing was when we arrived, we had to use a phone in reception to dial '0'. We were asked to come down to the coffee shop to book-in. We had to traipse back down two flights of stairs, be handed a set of keys, given the B&B information pack and told the times for breakfast. Then we were taken back up the stairs and back into reception. Thankfully, we only had an overnight bag, wouldn't have fancied lugging a large suitcase down only to have had to lug it back up!

Jenny and Garry (owners) need to sort this inconvenience out.

We also didn't like the way Jenny spoke to the staff in front of us. With an officious tone she told the young girl in the cafe to clear our plates. Well my advice is either do it yourself (as you were standing there), or train your staff in advance.

We also didn't like the way she spoke to the lovely, friendly breakfast waitress. Jenny asked if we were 'still' waiting for our toast. We had ordered and we were waiting, so we said yes. Jenny disappeared into the kitchen and then a moment later the waitress appeared with toast, apologising for the wait, but there wasn't a problem. This was very irritating...

On a good note. Garry was very friendly and helpful, as were the other staff. The location is excellent, though parking is a pain. Breakfast was very good. As was the cafe, though don't order the French bread as they bake it from frozen, to-order, warm bread is always a bit odd in my book.

Room Tip: If you are travelling alone, see what offers they have for their suites, you'll get a better dea...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we welcome feedback. I recall we spoke at some length whilst you were waiting for your husband to return from packing the car, and I am surprised that you didn’t raise these points at that time. You make a number of points so I have answered in these under the headings below.
Rooms
We accept that the room you had is one of our smaller doubles and perhaps we should make this clearer in our information. As you describe the room is at the top of the building in a 1930 Dormer extension and is level with the water tank. We therefore give a briefing on check in and have instructions in the room, on the procedure to adopt, to ensure that gravity does not affect the quality of your shower.
The Building
Gleneagles is a grade 2 listed Victorian building and does have a lot of stairs but because of the listing and the economics, we are not able to install a lift. Our website gives clear guidance that there are a number of stairs and to enquire about suitability of the accommodation if you have mobility problems.
Pricing
Thank you for your comments re the pricing structure. We do not charge by the room we charge according to the number of occupants and the type of room occupied. Our website or Booking.com does not have any rooms priced at £55.
Check In
It would appear a member of staff asked you to come down to check in, this is not our procedure and you should have been met in the Hall. We have reminded all staff of this. You would usually find the Guest information pack in the room ,this had just, that morning, been republished and we were about to put these back in the rooms.
Management of Staff
At this point could I clarify that Penny (not Jenny) and Garry are the owners. I have shown the member of staff who was working on that morning your comments and she was surprised that you had felt this way as she and Penny have worked harmoniously alongside each other for a long time.
Parking and Coffee Shop
There are some inconveniences with the parking arrangements and we are working to provide additional free parking facilities outside the Guesthouse and hope these will be available within the next few weeks. We are glad you enjoyed our Coffee shop offering, all our food is freshly prepared and this includes the baguette which was not frozen and is freshly baked.

We had an enjoyable one night stay in Gleneagles, the owners were exceedingly friendly and guests were made to feel very welcome.

The hotel was spotlessly clean, breakfast delicious, especially the home made marmalade.

The weather was good and so we enjoyed a coffee and a cake on the front terrace.

We have one complaint but that is with Booking.com and NOT with the owners of hotel.

We booked late and were slightly disappointed with the room as it was rather small and we did not have a sea view. Okay it was cheap but we were a bit disappointed. If you look on the hotels own website each of the rooms is described very accurately and there are different prices depending upon which room you select. Bookings.com make no such comparison and so you get what you get.

We would definitely go back, but would book directly next time and pay a bit more for a bigger room.

Room Tip: Go direct to the hotel's own website to choose which room you want as they are all different.

This was the perfect place for us to stay, Penny and Gary were so nice and helpful and knew all the best places for me to keep the kids entertained!
Breakfast was great and the rooms nice and clean with sevice clean every day!
We have the best time and my boys loved it!

Really enjoyed two nights stay and breakfast in August 2013. Our room on top floor did need a little redecorating but we visited our family's sea view rooms on 3 floors (which is the majority of the rooms!), and they were ALL spectacular :-)

Room Tip: any sea view on floors 1, 2 or 3.

Dear Emma K

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the views from your family's rooms. I do hope that when you next return you will find that work to upgrade the rooms is continuing, though with a building this size it takes a while to get round all the rooms.
