I stayed at the Westcliff Hotel recently to attend a friends’ nearby wedding. I decided to opt for a 'Luxury room' at special rate of £115 per night instead of £130. The luxury rooms have sea views, 4 poster beds and 'some' benefit from spa baths.
Upon arrival at the hotel the staff were friendly and directed us to our room 204. To reach the room we took the lift which was somewhat compact (about enough room for 2-3 people) with an inner folding metal door. Not recommended for those with claustrophobia.
Anyway we arrived out of the lift into a corridor that reminded me of school trips to residential education centres - lots of tired looking stairs and doors. We passed a laundry cupboard complete with a discarded drinks bottle and dust on top.
Anyway onto the room: The room had a reasonable view out over the sea. However I'd hardly describe the room as luxury.
The bathroom looked like it belonged in low quality student accommodation. The toilet seat had a chip in it and upon lifting the seat it was obvious that it hadn't been cleaned for sometime. The sink was similar with a black build up of mould around the overflow hole. The floor was also decked out with hospital like lino flooring and the radiator and tiles were all splashed and dirty.
The bedroom had a four poster bed which was essentially a creaky dusty frame around a double bed. The curtains were old and ripped, the table surface had bubbled, paint was pealing off the skirting board and one of the wardrobe door hinges was coming off.
Upon trying to watch television I was presented with a fuzzy picture. Changing the channel made no difference. I've seen better quality English television reception in hotels in Holland.
On to breakfast: We arrived at the breakfast room and waited at the entrance for someone to direct us. Being Sunday morning the place was quite busy and after sometime we made our own way in and found a table. The hotel operates a buffet style breakfast with the option of ordering hot drinks and toast from the staff. We made our way to the buffet queue where we found out that the hotel is only able to cook one item at a time. So in order to get a full breakfast you'd need to make around 3 visits: the first one to get beans and hash browns, the second one to get eggs and a third visit to get bacon. Given that the hotel knows how many people are staying overnight we found it surprising that they weren't able to judge just how much breakfast they needed to make..
On to checkout: Upon checkout we pointed out that we were disappointed with the room and the breakfast service. The reception staff were friendly and offered us a £35 discount on the room rate. We accepted this and left, never to return.
Maybe I should add that the hotel was undergoing some renovation works on the first floor. Walking through this floor showed that they appeared to be painting over the existing wallpaper and replacing the carpet. I'm assuming that the room we stayed in had not been refurbished. It's a shame that a hotel doesn't advertise refurbished/non refurbished rooms at different rates to help manage the guests’ expectations.
