We have been going to Mamma Mia's off and on for years and the food has always been very good. This time was no exception; well prepared, hot and tasty. The service has always been on the slow side, but this visit it was appalling. We were going to the theatre 5 minutes along the road; due to be there at 8 o'clock, so we booked a table for 6 o'clock to give us time for a leisurely meal. After being seated for 15 minutes a young waiter wandered over and asked if we wanted drinks. These came 10 minutes later. We then sat there for some while, during which I looked for someone to take our order. There seemed a singular lack of staff. By the time I at last managed to catch the same waiter's eye we had been seated for 45 minutes I suggested we might like to order some food. He clapped his hand to his mouth and said he was so sorry, he had forgotten us. It could have been his first nght in the job because he didn't have a clue what he was doing. Either poor training or just poor standards. Given that it had taken so long to even get our order taken we decided to forgo the starters and go straight to the main course. As I have said the food was very good, well up to the usual standard, but by the time we recieved our meal we had been sitting in the restaurant for nearly one and a quarter hours. By now we didn't have time for desserts or coffee, and left in time to walk allong the road to the theatre. Our meal for 5 came to about £85, including two bottles of wine, had the restaurant managed to provide anything approaching a service the bill could have been double that because we would have had starters, desserts and coffee. The management should look closely at their service standards because based on our experience they are losing a great deal of potential income. Not sure if we will give Mamma Mia's another chance.
