“Cracking day out with the kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

This is my first visit to the gun powder mills and won't be my last. On arrival was shown into the rocket making area, my 8 and 3 year old had get fun making a rocket, to then be told that we were firing them in 45 mins. We came back and got our rockets and then went over to the field and fired them. The kids then went to professor nitrates lab which was funny and informative. There are lots of hands on things for the kids to do and staff are very friendly. I wouldn't recommend this place for adults only, but anyone with a small family up to the age 14 will have a great time. The cafe is basic but food is good value for money. I will come again with the kids as they have been speaking about it for the last two days. Check the Internet to find out what is going on before you attend. Keep up the great work and see you soon.

Just returned from visit to the gunpowder mills had a brilliant day lots for the kids to do and see I also found it very interesting, the kids made rockets painted t shirts and thoroughly enjoyed the mad lab show would thoroughly recommend for a good fairly inexpensive day out although it may not be such fun in bad weather as most things are outdoors

“Well worth the visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

This far exceeded our expectations, we spent 4.5 hours visiting and it didn't seem like it. Having a daughter (16) and son (18) and having both of them enjoying it was a great surprise!
If you do go the land train with commentary is a must do to understand the site. Walking around gives you a far better chance of seeing the deer though

Had a lovely day at this hidden gem. I can best describe it as a volunteer/enthusiast run place not yet tainted by corporate greed. The kids were happy all day, Professor Nitrates lab shows were twenty totally engaging minutes of fun and the other little things going on kept them smiling. Staff were friendly and helpful, the site was clean, (we didn't use the cafe, there's plenty of room for a picnic). The price is on a par if not a bit cheaper than similar things and it's pretty easy to get to.

“A shot in the dark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

We were looking for somewhere to entertain our 11-year-old grandson while his parents attended a wedding at Epping when my wife suggested the gunpowder mills, prepared to make the sacrifice of being bored for the afternoon for the sake of Benji. Nothing could have surprised her more than to find how entertaining the visit was. This was due in no small part to the wonderfully helpful staff and the fun provided - from the compressed air rockets we built, to the arms collection where I was able to hold again the make of rifle I carried during National Service, to the explosive antics of Professor Nitrate. All the guides were first class without exception and not one of them would take the tips we offered in appreciation. Altogether a great experience and we wish we lived nearer to try a birthday party there.
