We visited for fireworks night on the Saturday and were very impressed with the display - it was amazing! There were lots of activities going on beforehand and we arrived at 3pm (fireworks were at 7) and found plenty to keep our children entertained during that time. The theatre show was great fun and they enjoyed making slime and a lantern. My only criticism is that the science show is the same content (although a different "professor")as it has been for the past 2 years! We have now seen the same show about 4/5 times. Please consider devising a new science show for those visitors who are returning.

Second time here for fireworks night, and another amazing display. I'd go as far as to say this is the most amazing display I've ever seen. Better than anything the big parks in the US can offer, and a fraction of the cost.
Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and the exhibits and attractions are fascinating. Visitor tip, go early as there is a huge amount to see and do for all the family before the fireworks start. A trip round the armoury is highly recommended.

Many thanks to the whole team of volunteers. Our grandchildren (girl of 6 and boy of 9) loved the place. Lots of fun activities such as making and launching of rocket, making slime and witches hats. And there was the mad lab show which kept them entertained for an hour. A playground where to run about in between sessions too. We also liked that the cafe provided a simple but attractive menu at reasonable prices. And to finish the day we liked the informative tour of the grounds in the tractor. An excellent half term day spent there that I recommend to everybody.

We visited as a group and were able to enjoy a trip around the site on the land train. The film presentations were interesting and the weapon exhibition was well-presented. All the volunteers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and contributed to a very informative and enjoyable day. Opening days could be more convenient – the site is closed on Fridays and Saturdays – but obviously are structured around availability of staff. I am sure that footfall could be much improved with a consequent increase in badly needed revenue.

Spent a very enjoyable bank holiday here with the kids. 7 year old daughter and 10 year old son loved the mad lab. Professer Nitrate is very humorous and kept everyone entertained (including adults). They also enjoyed the test range where you can try water rockets and an airgun. Armoury was fantastic, they could try on helmets and hold some o fthe guns. Altogether a great family day out.

Every year the Mill has a summer Mad Lab on certain days each week with activities to build and launch rockets, watch science experiments, and, if you are over 10yrs to have a go on their shooting range.
The activities and science show are really suited for 6-8 year olds and are timed throughout the day to allow you to visit the Mill and exhibition interspersed with something to occupy the kids and stop them getting bored.
Unfortunately our 10year old was very underwhelmed by the shooting range but loved the rocket car racing which was next to it.
We chose to attend when our teenager was off doing something else which was probably a good idea as I am not sure that it would have caught her interest.
The Mill is trying to strike a difficult balance to portray the story of it’s history and the exhibit explains the function of the Mill and development of explosives really well but may struggle to hold the attention of younger children in this area (our 10 year old got a little bored in this section as it is very wordy and lacks the interactive format which kids have now come to expect).
The real winner of the day for “the boy” was the armoury. Really knowledgable and friendly staff who took the time to explain the rifles on show and had ones available for handling. The icing on the cake was the board identifying which weapons were used by the various characters in the Star Wars series and a tour around the armoury to identify these and how they had been modified for the movie which made his afternoon.
Overall we spent an enjoyable 4 hours here with options for indoor or outdoor picnics and a cafe shop on site which serves good coffee.
Would recommend that it is worth a trip but if you are taking kids make sure you time it for when the Mad Lab is open or you may struggle to keep them entertained.

We arrived at 10am, departed 4pm and only stopped for 30 mins for our packed lunch! The 4 boys were age 7 and 8, and the day scored two 9 out of 10s and two 10 out of 10s at the end of the day from them. Highlights were the Prof Nitrate's science show, the Armoury - I literally had to drag them out after forever! - and making/launching their own rocket. They now also know the 3 elements that fire needs (heat, oxygen, fuel) and that explosions don't necessarily need fire ("chemical reaction, build up a pressure") so wholly educational too! Staff were helpful, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and patient with the child with HDHD/speech difficulties. We bought tickets in advance so knew that it would be open. All in all excellent fun, would definitely recommend.

Just had an amazing educational full day out at The Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey.
Together with my 7 & 10 year old boys we made rockets and launched them, learnt about rockets in the rocket vault, made slime, wrote secret messages before taking in the science show. Which was perfectly pitched for the boys.
There was plenty to do to keep us there from 10am - 4.30pm.
Staff and volunteers are very helpful and knowledgeable. Their passion for the site is evident. The boys loved the armoury and film about the site. The land train and minute railway are definitely good value. The cafe was nice well.
A lovely day out - thank you.
