“What a surprise....”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We arrived with 3 children (aged 11, 9 and 6) not sure what to expect but tempted by the zany sounding Professor Nitrate and his Mad Lab and had a great day. It was chilly with the threat of rain but the volunteers who run this site were more than capable of switching the timetable to fit everything in. The Armoury has great appeal to small boys and, unlike so many museums, they encourage children to handle the exhibits and are full of interesting facts. Professor Nitrate was a huge success, as was the rocket making. Archery not so successful but the shooting range met with approval. Good playground. Nice cafe. Arial display rather boring and perhaps of appeal to adults. Didn't fit in the ride round the site but we'll definitely be back (and at £34 for a family ticket for the five of us, very competitively priced).

“excellent half term entertainment for kids”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We all thoroughly enjoyed the excellent half term 'spy academy' entertainment including the mad-lab live shows; a mad prof with plenty of loud bangs and explosions. I enjoyed the hands on demo of an enigma machine from WWII, and the stories that the very knowledgeable volunteers are very happy to impart. Cheap and cheerful cafe, a kids play area, and a nature walk made this a memorable day out for the whole family.

“Spectacular”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

The thrice daily science shows are so good that following our visit my son and I went to the supermarket to buy ingredients to carry out the experiments that we had seen ( those that we could do ).
It was a ,miserable day when we went but the show made it all worthwhile.
They have a small but well stocked armoury an exhibition about how to make gunpowder , cordite and a film show. You can make your own rockets and test them , shoot nerf guns and bows and arrows, a 1940's exhibition. In better weather you can take a train and visit the wildlife that they have.
It is a museum run almost entirely by volunteers but is one of the best museums that we have been to.
A better stocked gift shop would have been nice .
