“new years eve party”

This hotel was booked for their new years eve black and white ball, parking was no problem but a long wait to check in.

The room was very nice and spacious with all ammenaties in the room. On going up to the lounge and bar area we found that the area with seating very small and not enough seats and drinks prices costly.

On arrival at the function suit there was drinks on arrival as self service! where it would be nice to welcome the guests with the drinks served from a tray by staff. In the suit this was all set out very nice and neat ready for the evenings festivities.
The food ? the starters came which all were pre ordered ours was a cheese souffle and served on the plate all alone and looked compleatly lost, but the taste was very nice not over powering taste of cheese and very light.
The other starter was a salad of artichoke and this was said to be fair.
Next we had an intermediate which they called passion fruit caviar which in my opinion was a wast of time serving as it was so tasteless it defies description.
Next came the main meal this was Mignon of beef, this was served up with out being asked how the beef be cooked? it came up so raw that blood ran down the mashed potatos it sat on, as the plate was placed on the table several of us said this was not acceptable and to take it away and cook it correctly to which the reply was leave it till every body had been served and then we will take it to be replaced, by the time the food returned all the vegetables had gone cold and had to be replaced at the same time the meat that had been sent back for correct cooking came back with little change, at this point i had lost all interest in the food and told them to keep it.

next came the dessert this was a pistachio & praline truffle.
This was presented very nicely and as for the tast this was extremly nice with out being over powering and looked and tasted as a proper dessert should.

Also there was no coffee after the meal, for this type of meal after dinner coffee should be served as part of the meal, coffee was available from a machine which had to be paid for.
Breakfast was another experience, first the staff had no information that our breakfast was included with our booking, once thro and sat down at the table we proceded to the food counter to find that most of the ingrediants were missing and had to wait for these to be added to the counter, once we got our food we found it was well cooked and of good quality and tasty, coffee and tea was served in large pots nice and hot.
GERNERAL COMMENTS

If this place wants to compete with others for functions including food and at competitive prices i feel i must look at employing staff with proper knowledge of what is required of them.

The staff it self were very help full to their current ability but feel that with more training and leadership they will be better equiped to cope with a larger number of clients with out being stressed .

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to leave such candid and detailed feedback. This was of course our first New Year’s Eve function and indeed we have served only a few functions of this type of nature so we are still learning. We will be holding a debrief in January to discuss and review the seasonal festivities and write next year’s programme.

Kieran spent many hours preparing the special menu and ensuring the quality and tenderness of the beef fillet in particular. We only had a request from 2 of our diners of this function for well-done beef and therefore only prepared 2 cooked this way. (Chefs will nearly always cook red meat pink) with hindsight we should have specifically asked this question either before the night or at the beginning of service.

The hotel was almost full for NYE and as such was very busy for breakfast. I apologise that the breakfast buffet needed replenishing when you arrived for breakfast and am pleased that you thought that the meal was well cooked and tasty when you received it.

We stayed here overnight on Christmas Day and had no problem parking or booking in at all.
Lovely clean fresh room on the Second Floor which had a view of the airport apron.
There were two planes parked there when we went to bed and when we woke up on Boxing Day they had gone and another airline's one was there instead. Absolutley no noise!
The bed was very comfortable and there was an option for pillow choice.
Breakfast was very good - good range of cooked buffet with the order option for freshly cooked eggs if required.
Please.please, do away with the' do it yourself' toaster though - it does cause a bottle neck at the servery and the aroma of burnt toast is not appealing. 'Spoil' us with fresh toast brought to the table please!

Thank you for your kind feedback regarding your recent stay. The hotel was specifically designed to take advantage of its location to the airport and built to ensure the planes do not disturb guests but delight them by the view.

Your comment regarding the toaster is the first. We would gladly bring toast from the kitchen if you would prefer - please do ask. I will however monitor feedback of a similar nature.

We choose this hotel over the one we normally use for a change and it looked nice and new. We booked an executive room which included breakfast. The first diss appointment was that we were advise we had to pay for parking even as residents. I could understand it if we were leaving our car there while we went on holiday but that was not the case. The room was very nice, well furnished and of a good standard. We had a corner room on the second floor with glass walls around facing the airport. However I was disappointed to find that the glass was frosted and we could not see anything through it. Would have been a good view if we could see it. However, the worst part was the bed. The mattress was ridiculously soft and had a dip in the middle. My wife and I spent the night sliding into the middle and unable to get comfortable. We mentioned this at check out but all we got was we will make a note of this should you stay with us again ??? If all the beds are like that then we will not be back.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay. The corner rooms are quite unique, as a modern hotel the architects wanted to create something a little unusual and whilst the reglit glass is a mix of opaque and semi opaque (to give rooms a little privacy) they do have 2 ordinary window panes to view from.

I am surprised about your comment regarding the bed, as the hotel is only 3 months old and the rooms are relatively little used. I will personally check and have fixed early in the New Year.

Had a lovely lunch at the hotel restaurant. Fabulous views from the rooftop restaurant. Excellent service from very attentive and friendly staff. The decor was modern and had a lovely relaxing atmosphere. We had a choice of the bar menu or restaurant menu. Chose from the bar menu and enjoyed a lovely meal seated in the restaurant. Not exactly inexpensive but just about reasonable. Will definitely return. Only downside is that I think you have to pay for parking which is rather expensive. I live a short walk away so can't confirm this but worth checking.

The car park is free for up to 3 hours for patrons of the bars and restaurant. you just need to show your receipt and parking ticket at reception when leaving to have your ticket validated.

Stayed overnight in a superior room nice bar, good location. Enjoyed a really good meal in the restaurant. Staff very helpful especially Emma who helped us with our booking. Would certainly recommend this hotel.

As a new establisment it is as one would expect clean fresh and tasteful well designed.
The rooms vary in price and i would advise to research cost before booking as you can find good deals.
The only one major draw back is food ! we had raw bacon in our club sandwich the chips hard and that was in the bar area .The main meal was slow almost a two hour wait after the starter and the food poor although smartly presented.
We complained and was advised most the cooks are all agency staff and the kitchen was not well designed when built .My advice was that if they employed a good top quality head cheif to run the kitchens and employ his or own staff then it would be a fine place to eat but if they pay peanuts then they can only expect monkeys and to be honest i think monkeys would be a better job . So sleep rest have a drink 9/10 -sevice 8/10 -food 3/10 .

Room Tip: Eat sleep drink but do not eat.

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay here at Holiday Inn Southend. Your comments regarding the hotel and rooms are kind and very welcome.

I was disappointed to learn of your poorly cooked food experience in the 1935 Bar and would like to apologise for the shortcoming. It is true to say that we have employed some agency staff during the opening phase and latterly to help with the additional business over the very busy festive period. This in no way should impact the cooking ability for such a dish and we need to work harder on delivering consistency.

As with all new businesses, we have had some teething difficulties. With hindsight the kitchen layout was not ideal for our first menu we have designed. We are currently creating a new menu, due out at the end of January. This new menu will make better use of the facilities we have. We will also have the benefit of our first 3 months experience and will look to improve our consistency whilst maintaining our aim of homemade, well-cooked and value for money food and drink.

I was delighted that a Holiday Inn was coming to Southend - they are my first choice of hotel group to use, so was looking forward to the stay.

I had booked a superior room, yet when i arrived to check in it had been downgraded to an exec room - yes downgraded. The receptionist couldn't explain why and accordingly put me back into the superior room. I think the reason for the downgrade may be explained later in the review....

Went up to the room and it was a 'wow' moment. The room is fantastic, a 5 star room easily. Wonderful bathroom with seperate walk in shower and lovely big bath. Excellent complimentary toiletries, sewing kit, shoe shine etc etc. Big comfy bed and seperate lounge area and sufficient tea/coffee etc.

Anyway, it all went wrong at 2am. Bang bang bang, drill drill drill, bang bang bang. Couldn't believe it. It ended up that maintenance work was taking place above my room. A phone call to you reception obviously followed and i got called back a few minutes later apologising and saying no more banging will take place. Wrong. 2.50am banging was still taking place.

I spoke to the front of house manager the following day, who to be fair could not apologise enough. He assured me that no banging would take place on my 2nd night - which was true, i did get a full nights sleep on day 2.

I'm presuming my room was changed as this work was due to take place - this could have been explained on check in maybe? If I knew what was ahead that night maybe a change of room would have been a good idea.

My biggest gripe is that somebody made the decision to allow this work to happen at this time. I cannot get my head around the fact that somebody thought - yes 2am is a suitable time for heavy work in a hotel when everyone is sleeping. And secondly, if the work was known to be above my room - why didn't this get communicated on check in?

I've not been put off staying again - the rooms are lovely, and surely maintenance work isn't going to happen every night. I just hope nobody else gets treated the same - you have a wonderful hotel here, it's just decision making that needs improving!!

Thank you for leaving feedback regarding your stay. We did indeed make a mistake on you bedroom allocation and for the very reason you mention. The works on the 5th floor could not be carried out during the day due to the amount of footfall in the restaurant and bar and it was decided that the works should be carried out at night. The contractors assured me there was little noise as they had made the replacement items in the factory and would only require minor adjustment. I requested that 401 was not used, just in case there was noise. Unfortunately the builders had to make on site adjustments, due to the size not being measured correctly. I am sorry we did not allocate you the correct room further along the corridor and apologise for the inconvenience caused.

I was delighted to learn you enjoyed everything else and that this experience will not deter you from visiting again. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.
