“Good beach, but it is not a city!”
Review of City Beach

City Beach
Reviewed June 9, 2013

One of the 8 beaches in Southend between Shoeburyness and Leigh-on-Sea. We have been to them all as we are from Southend.

City beach is one of the main two beaches along Southend seafront and therefore one of the busiest. Three shells beach is the other main one next to Adventure Island. It is not my personal favourite but the improvements Southend Council have made to the area are good and have certainly modernised the place and added some nice features. The fountains are nice and the seafront looks cleaner. Not keen on the "shared space" thing though.

Lots of arcades and cafes, there is also a Sealife centre, Adventure Island and crazy golf, bowling in the Kursaal etc. The beach is nice and quite sandy with a few stones. Deckchairs for hire. Plenty of toilets by the Water fountains close to beach.

Parking can be hard on this part of the beach. Sealife Centre car park is the nearest, but avoid busy weekends and holidays or get there before 10:00am in order to get a parking space.

Great if you like lots to do, if you prefer quieter beaches, then head towards Westcliff and Chawkwell or the other end of Thorpe Bay and Shoebury.

Southend-on-Sea is the ideal destination for a day trip. It has a really good shopping centre, plenty of places to eat, the train ride to end of the pier, the beach, Adventure Island, amusement arcades and a nice walk along the promenade to Thorpe Bay. The council has received vast amounts of funding to improve this area, which looks clean and spacious. The lovely pavement fountains attract children of all ages but are really a bit too close to the road; maybe Southend Council will take measures to screen them off on the road side before an accident occurs.

No dogs are allowed on any beaches in Southend in summer, but you will often find someone with a bull terrier or some other big dog on the beach that the fore shore officer is too frightened to move on. It is cleaned in the mornings after the night's debris of takeaways and beer cans has been cleared away but then quickly get dirtied again. Not the place for animal lovers or a family wanting a fun day out with the family pet.

Southend has spent a considerable amount of money and time improving this area. Children love the little fountains which come out of the pavement. It is lovely to see them enjoying simple pleasures like this. The whole promenade looks lovely and modern, as well as being clean. Just be careful crossing the road to the amusements on the other side because the road is 'shared space' with motor vehicles. Enjoyable place to visit on a sunny day - bracing in the winter.

Southend is a town in transition. The towns council don't seem to know if we are a Seaside town A business Centre or a University Campus town. We are famous for our Seasside , Golden Mile & Pleasure Pier so lets be proud of it!
