We called in on a Saturday lunch-time. The restaurant was moderately busy. Unfortunately, there only seemed to be three staff working, one of which gave the impression that she did not know what she was doing. We waited at the bar for some acknowledgement of our presence, along with several other people waiting for tables. After being ignored for ten minutes, during which time people arriving after us got served, we walked out as we had limited time. This place has gone downhill. Shame we didn't get to eat as previously the food has been superb.

A nice restaurant with a good and varied menu.
The serving staff were very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant was vey busy and as a result it took a long time for the food to come and was a little overcook and many of the ingredients were Luke warm. The food was however very good quality.

Our server asked how the food was and was horrified when we told him it was only just warm and offered to re do the order, we said it was OK, we did not want another long wait. Several minutes the manageress came to us, apologised and said she understood due to one part of the dinners not being cooked in time and as compensation we could choose a desert that we would not pay for.

I think this is an excellent way to deal with a problem, say sorry and try to make the defect good, thank you for restoring my faith in a customer orientated business

I would return to this restaurant

As a local me and my partner used to regularly go to the kings head for dinner and it used to be really lovely food, but within the last year or so it's really gone down hill.

The bad

As a small local pub, you don't expect the food to be amazing but quite often it's just bad and almost always things are different than the menu states and accompaniments stated to be included with the main like coleslaws, sauces and salads are left out from the meal altogether and you have to ask for them. The food is not always terrible, something's are quite nice! but you expect all food to be up to standard. A few times we've had undercooked food, like cold, raw undercooked onion rings, undercooked translucent fish and please do not eat the churros! They are crispy on the outside, and uncooked glue like dough on the inside, really not nice! Very often they forget about you, a few times we've had a 2 hour wait for food to come on a quiet non busy day. Or the food comes but then you have a long wait to get the cutlery to eat it as they forget about you. The menu has recently changed, it's now more expensive and the potion sizes are smaller.

The good

The pub has a really nice, warm, cosy, family atmosphere. The staff are always friendly and when you get served are always very helpful and polite. The pub is clean and welcoming and the beer garden and front seating is nice in the summer. They also host quiz nights which are fun and well done, although don't go assuming its definitely going to happen or make plans for others to come from out of the area as you may be disappointed. Unless enough people enter it they don't do it. They also do some nice events sometimes like Easter egg hunts on Easter and things.

Overall, a nice place to go and have a drink with family and friends, but don't expect much where the food is concerned.

This was our second visit to the King’s Head for Sunday lunch with our family. This is one of the most ancient pubs in Essex, with parts of the structure dating back nearly 450 years. The main building is a beautiful half wood construction which dates back to the 17th century, and was originally built using old ships' timbers.

Although there was a good choice of starters on offer we decided to give them a miss on this occasion because knowing how generous their main meals are from past experience, we wanted to leave room for desserts. There was a good choice of roast meats and four of us ordered the roast turkey with all the trimmings and one person had the roast lamb and we ordered from the children’s menu for our grandson.

Our meals were served with generous portions of meat, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips and Yorkshire puddings and a variety of vegetables, all freshly cooked, accompanied by the traditional condiments and sauces that you would expect.

The service was good, the waitresses were very friendly, helpful and efficient and the food was reasonably priced.

There was a good selection of desserts on offer including the traditional cheese board, which some establishments don’t seem to offer these days. We sampled the homemade apple pie and crumble with custard and the profiteroles and our grandson had mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce which he thoroughly enjoyed.

The bar had various beers and lagers and a selection of wines.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and will definitely be visiting the King’s Head again for Sunday lunch.
