Description: The Bell Inn, set in the lovely historic village of Horndon on the Hill, is a 15th Century Coaching Inn run by the same family for over 75 years. The two busy bars have the warm, friendly atmosphere of a 'proper' pub. There's an open fire, numerous ales on hand pump and a top-class wine by the glass list. The menu changes daily, using seasonal and local produce where possible. Upstairs, and in the Georgian properties next door but one, are 27 individually styled bedrooms featuring both modern and period twists that remain sympathetic to the beautiful buildings in which they reside. The Bell is featured in all the 'serious' guides and has won numerous industry awards including being recommended in The Times Cool Hotel Guide 2014 and The Sunday Times Food List as one of the 10 best gastropubs in the UK.

We have been meaning to visit for quite some time. We started in the traditional bar which a good range of ales. The swordfish was well kept and we soon decided to have another. We were welcomed to the upstairs part of the restaurant by the fantastic service staff. We noticed the recommended wines were coming in at less than £18 which considering the quality was great value. The choice of starters was great with each of us having many possible options. After having a great deal of deliberation two of our party had the goats cheese risotto and the other members had ballottine of partridge and the rillettes. The mains consisted of mushroom tart, lamb and sweetbreads and the calf liver. Everyone declared the food outstanding in every respect. The thrice cooked chips were a particular highlight. Only two of us managed desserts which were a ice pudding with hazelnut ice cream and I have forgotten the other. All as fantastic as the other courses. Without doubt one of the best meals I have had in essex.

Never felt the need to write a review for this place as it needs no compliments given always 100% Fab...The Chief is a Legend deserves a Michelin star or two!! John & Lesley are living legends too always friendly but professional to the core. But some of the waiting staff are letting this place down they could be friendly when serving you their attitude is like well we are doing you such a big favour as we know how good and busy this place is so what do you want kind of attitude a little complacent we feel
When you try to book on the telephone they are quite aloof and short unless it is always fully booked when we ring, which I doubt they never apologise or offer another day when you could come In, is this just Me or are there others out there who have had the same treatment.

What a joy to visit a well run comfortable and truly hospitable hotel and restaurant where all the staff seem to enjoy their work and provide a genuine welcome. The place is obviously very old but in wonderful condition. Our bedroom which was in a building just up the High Street from the main building was superb. Comfortable, very modern and elegantly furnishing, state of the art bathroom with big bath and wet-room and a giant flat screen TV which angled to allow viewing from bed of the lovely sitting room area.
We almost did not want to go down to dinner but are very glad that we did. Super fresh locally sourced ingredients, beautifully cooked and served with pride.
A joyful experience which we look forward to repeating soon.

Large restaurant with an upstairs and downstairs. Lovely old building, lots of staff, to sure they all knew what they were suppose to be doing. No salt and pepper and no offer of any. The food I thought was average. Nothing exciting , food tasted ok. I thought it expensive. This restaurant has a very good reputation. Maybe I have a unsophisticated palate ? But as far as I could tell my meal consisted of two pork chops and a large hash brown .....

We visited recently with friends. This was our first visit but our friends are frequent visitors and recommended the Bell. We booked in advance as we were visiting on a Saturday night and I would recommend you do the same as it was packed!

There are tables in the restaurant both downstairs and upstairs so it depends what kind of atmosphere you'd prefer. Upstairs is much quieter away from the busy bar area.

Service was prompt and friendly. The menu I'd say had something for everyone, although an addition of a dairy free dessert would be a plus. I had the sole and sweet potato chips which was wonderful. I was a bit limited on starters but the one I could have was nice.

The bill worked out £80 per couple for three courses with alcohol which is reasonable. Would visit again.
