A lovely place all the rooms are named after famouse mistresses. We stayed in the one named Lady Hamilton which was lovely. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful and the location is beautiful overlooking the Essex countryside. An excellent place to unwind within easy reach of London.

On arrival we were told that cooked breakfast was served until 10 am. We enjoyed the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and on the second morning when more of the family had arrived to stay for a wedding, we all trotted down at 9.05 looking forward to a fry up and were told that cooked breakfast finished at 9. am. When we said we weren't told of the time changes the waitress said its in the hotel brochure. We were not at all happy particularly as it was so close to the finish time.
Our room at the top of Hill house was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The room was not over heated as is often the case in hotels, in fact it was quite cool. However there were no bedside lamps, the bathroom had spots of mould and one of the blinds was tatty. Room 2 where other family members stayed was very small stuffy and the window would not stay open. This could have been a really good review but for a few issues.

We stayed 2 nights for a wedding at a venue nearby. Our room in Hill house on the top floor was clean with a comfortable bed and suited our needs. I liked that our room was not overheated as so many hotels rooms are these days, in fact it was quite cool which neither of us mind at all. The only issues for me were no bedside lamps and the bathroom had spots of mould around the bath and the blind was a bit tatty in the little dressing room area but as I said for the money it was absolutely fine. We arrived on the Saturday night, when we were shown to our room we were told that breakfast was served until 10.00 am. We both enjoyed a good breakfast the following morning. More of our family arrived to stay on the Sunday night and we confidently told them that a good breakfast was served until 10.00am When we all arrived down on Monday morning looking forward to our smoked salmon and scrambled eggs at 9.05am and were told cooked breakfast finishes at 9.00am. We were not at all happy but were told its written in the hotel brochure so clearly it was out own fault! Shame really otherwise all in all a pleasant stay. I should add that there was a continental breakfast still available to us, but it didn't quite do it for us. Also Room 2 was hot and stuffy and the window would not stay open. We all left feeling that it could have a been better but for small details.

Stayed one night here on our way home from the Eurotunnel. The pub is a fabulous old building but we stayed in room 8, a modern room with a terrific, well-designed wet-room style bathroom. It was very comfortable and quiet; the only problem was that the shower was incredibly hot even on the coolest setting. We ate a very good meal in the bustling pub and next day breakfast was served in the annex – you could choose from various different options, including a full English, or as I chose, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs – very tasty and lots of salmon, although it was cold: I prefer it when it’s chopped up a bit and mixed in with the egg. Service was very good, in fact all the staff were really pleasant and very helpful in smoothing my way as my mobility is not good. I would definitely recommend this place.

Stayed for our final night over the Easter break at The Bell as it was near enough to Southend Airport and looked great from previous reviews. We weren't disappointed.

Great atmosphere on a busy Easter weekend, the only down side was we couldn't get any bar snacks until they started serving again at 7pm.

The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Very basic bathroom and the shower head was spraying everywhere where it should have been. All in all though, nice enough and comfortable.

Dinner was great - really good food and great service.

Room Tip: We had the Bonson Suite which is right next to the upstairs dining room. Basic for a Suite and some...

Stayed here for the 1st time , a thursday night and the bar & restaurant were both busy wiith diners and drinkers, the food is tasty and interesting. My room was in Hill house, just up the street and was spacious, clean and modern. No complaints and in an area with a dearth of quality , reasonably priced places to stay will be getting my business again.
