The Crown House

We booked this as our first Groupon break! The photo a little deceiving re size of grounds! However a pleasant small country house awaited us.We upgraded to the four poster room! Bed quite small & very high! Room spacious thou! The bath had to use a step to get in and out! As I have a spine problem a bit probmatic!
Claire welcomed us & a nice bar/lounge to sit in.The food nicely presented & hot at dinner. We opted to stay for dinner the second night as we thought a different menu (these had been left in reception) we were then given the same menu from the night before! If we had known we would have opted to eat out as no variation.
We had breakfast this morning & both later suffering from tummy cramps.I had had the same on previous days breakfast.
Lots of positives small, friendly, well priced wine selections & a good spacious bar.Downside change some of tbe main meals on night for variety please.
Saffron Waldron a lovely town nearby & Ely & Bury St Edmunds easy to access.

Stayed for two nights on a Groupon offer which proved to be great value. We were in the four poster bedroom in the main house, room 10. It was a good size, traditionally decorated and spotlessly clean. The bed was extremely comfortable if a little high ! Maybe my lack of height didn't help ! The bathroom was spacious with a plentiful supply of good quality " smellies ".

Breakfast was served in the quirky conservatory with its abundance of foliage ! The breakfast was freshly cooked to order, of good quality and very large portions. Our Groupon deal included a contribution towards the cost of dinner fir ine night which made it reasonably priced. Without the voucher I think it would have been a little expensive. The bottle of house white wine was modestly priced and of good quality. The food was of good standard, nicely presented and served. If you want an alternative to dining at the hotel the Ickleton Lion pub, about 10 minutes drive away, offers good real ales, hearty food and a warm welcome.

The staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful. The lady at reception was particularly helpful and was very willing to offer advice about the local area.

Great Chesterford is a very quiet village but the location of the hotel offers good access to the Park and Ride facilities for Cambridge and is quite conveniently situated for Stansted airport.

Overall a very enjoyable stay which I would definitely recommend.

stayed September 2013.
This is a small hotel where all the staff help out. We were welcomed with a smile and check in was very fast. We were roomed in the main house in a room with traditional sloping floors. The room was well appointed and clean.
The evening meal was good pub grub well cooked.
The breakfast was buffet style and made with good quality food.
As it is buffet style the food was not piping hot but ok.
Throughout our stay the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is an old coaching Inn and I would describe its décor as old fashioned rather than as some have said tired. We will return.

Set on the edge of a small village we stayed in this hotel for one night. A very pleasurable experience enjoyed by my wife and I. Room 7 was delightful ( having been recently fully refurbished). In the lounge/bar the seating was very comfortable. Leather chairs or leather sofas to relax and unwind. Nice selection of drinks to choose from at the bar. Our dining experience here was very good too. Top quality products cooked fresh when ordered and a good wine list to select from. Excellent night sleep and a sumptuous breakfast, again cooked to order, was really tasty. Again top quality food cooked just right. A quiet hotel ( we stayed on a Thursday night) but heard can be very busy at times, especially weekends. They hold weddings and receptions here and are fully equipped to cater for any needs.

Room Tip: No shops in village but Saffron Walden is just 3 miles away. Tea, coffee facilities in room. Really...

Stayed here for five nights on a work trip. Staff were great very helpful and friendly. Service was very personal and genuine. The food in the restraunt is excellent and the menu varied. It's obvious that the staff here are very proud of the hotel, and rightly so!

We used groupon to stay here and upgraded to a four poster bed which was well worth it as views were great over garden and huge bath in ensuite. Location very quiet but there are plenty of things to do within10 min drive. It is the 'tiny little things' that let this guest house down. On arriving the young lad at the front didn't smile , didn't know what time breakfast was and just didn't seem welcoming at all so first impression wasn't great. This seemed to be a bit of a theme as all staff apart from the lady at dinner (been there for over 30 years) seemed to lack any customer service skills. I would imagine a basic training session on smiling , warm welcomes, introducing themselves at dinner , engaging customers with polite conversation would create a much better atmosphere as without it the place feels a bit dull!

Superb in every way...the food and family room was lovely but it was staff that exceeded our expectations the most. We had our 7 month old baby with us and the staff did everything they could to accommodate us.- including taking him for a walk whilst we had breakfast!!! I wouldn't think twice about staying here again.
