Recently held a family function here for 43 people, sit down three course meal + a disco in the Evening with an additional 30 guests.

The Hotel and Tina in particular were fantastic and meet all our needs (including a specific brand of real ale) after reading quite negative reviews our expectations were definitely exceeded.
Very good food and excellent service.

Certainly not the most up to date Hotel but a fantastic feel to the place with good old fashioned customer service.
If your looking for a generic modern Hotel stay away from The Crown House and leave it for those who appreciate a bit of individuality.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I booked this hotel for my husbands birthday and we enjoyed a very pleasant long weekend. The room was very clean and comfortable, just what you would expect when staying at an old posting house. As regular guests in hotels europewide we were very pleased to find all the staff friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast was very good and although we only had one evening meal it was cooked and presented perfectly. We will certainly stay here again in the future.

This is a very tired establishment. Dirty rooms, dirty bathrooms, dirty bar and lounge area. Decor is wearing decades of wear and tear. At best mediocre food. Expensive considering the environment. Lovely building that is simply crying out to be rescued and brought back to life.

I booked this hotel for a family get together and my wifes birthday, and although I was told that I was being up-graded to an "Executive Room" the decor and furnishings were disappointing! The whole hotel could do with a make over, especially the carpets and bathrooms where the tile grouting requires some attention and in my own room one of the shower doors were missing! We had four very comfortable nights with good quality beding.

Having said all that the staff were excellent, especially the young man who did breakfast in the morning, they were all very accommodating and looked after us exceptionally well. We had dinner in the hotel on the first night, which was excellent, and would have probably have eaten there more, but the decor and the strong damp smell as you enter the hotel was off-putting. The garden and surrounds are beautiful, unfortunately we did not have the weather to enjoy them, however the locality to Saffron Walden and Cambridge makes this a very pleasant area to stay. There are also a number of good local Golf courses and local attractions to visit including Audley End and Duxford.

Would I visit again? Yes! but I would hope that it might have receivied some TLC in the meantime!

The staff were all very helpful in this very pretty hotel. Our food was lovely and even our very picky children loved it, especially the lamb shank and cheesecake . The gardens are beautifully kept and a very enjoyable place to while away some time.

Family group went for Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. Owner and younger waiting staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. One of our party commented on how much difference such a welcoming and kind staff can make to the occasion. The food though was simply dreadful and brought back memories of the worst school dinners. It began with the bread rolls - we guessed bought in partially baked to be finished off on the premises. They were completley white, uncooked and doughy in the middle and inedible. The starters were uninspiring, without being bad. The prawn cocktail came without most of the sauce. Melted brie on a crumpet, rather than toast, was an interesting approach which appealed to some and not to others. The worst was yet to come, however. The mains were at best bland and at worst stomach churning. The salmon was unseasoned and tasteless, The veg - sliced carrots and broccoli, again completely unseasoned, soggy and overcooked. Two of us had lamb shank - supposedly slow cooked. The meat was tough and almost raw in the middle and can't have been cooked for even half of the time necessary for this dish. All the meat dishes came with plates swimming in greasy gravy - to the point where it was spilling over the sides of the plates. And one one of us asked for some mint sauce, it came in a dish so full that as the waitress brought it to the table, part of the contents split on the floor and table cloth, narrowly missing clothing and a handbag. The dish was so full that it was impossible to use the spoon to get some sauce out without it overflowing at the sides and on to the tablecloth! Potatoes were rationed to one roast and one new. Yorkshire puddings were also provided but were truly inedible, so thick, soggy and leathery that they were simply pushed to the side of the plate. Indeed, sadly, at the end of the main course most plates had half of their food still on them, uneaten and unwanted. We did not have desserts but chanced the coffee - a mistake as it tasted like the kind of thing which used to come out of one of those large steel drums in canteens. What made matters worse was the cream served was either on the turn our just too thick for use in coffee. As a result it curdled. I saw the same result - full, untouched cups, on another table as we left. All this is a real tragedy as the hotel and restaurant, though a little shabby and run down, is cosy and has a nice ambience. There is a conservatory with the most beautiful display of climbing flowers and the garden area is also very attractive. The owner is obviously very well meaning and, if success depended on this alone, she would win hands down. What is needed, however, is a half decent chef, some new managers/manageresses and better training of the enthusiastic but inexperienced junior waiting staff. Until then, much as it saddens me to say so, do not go there - unless you really thought hotel dining rooms were better 30 years ago than they are today.
