Recently stayed with my family for 3 days. Has a great position on the sea front and fantastic views. Staff all friendly and had good breakfast and also paid for a dinner which was good value. Our room was fairly good although bathroom dated, all clean and nice beds.
We had to squeeze two beds for the children into room but just managed but wanted the sea view so was happy regarding this as the family room has no sea view.
One thing book directly with the hotel as much cheaper. I made the mistake of booking online with Hotels.com who charged me £140 for the booking fee which I could have avoided by booking direct. Wont make this mistake again.
Overall enjoyed our stay and Im sure the hotel will be updated and modernized soon, it is a older building so I don't expect to be modern and I think that adds to its charm.

Room Tip: Sea views are great worth paying for.

My wife and I planned a long weekend break with our four year old grandaughter. Before booking we read the reviews which gave varying accounts of other holidaymakers experiences. I am a business traveller and spend upwards of forty nights per year in hotels ranging from the budget chains, privately run hotels up to the four star chains. Therefore I guess I am fairly well placed to write this, my first hotel review.

Upon arrival the hotel car park was full so we parked in one of the two hour bays on the promenade opposite the hotel. However this was not a problem as the hotel staff directed us to nearby unrestricted on street parking. The check in experience was efficient and friendly and we were given keys to a large family room with a sea view. The room had a large bay window which gave excellent views of the sea and nearby Clacton pier. The room was very clean and had recently been redecorated. The sheets, both on the double bed and our grandaughters bed were crisp, white and clean. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept well during our three night stay. The en-suite bathroom had clearly not been renovated for some time, however it was scrupulously clean, the sealant had recently been renewed (no mould) and everything worked well. The over-bath shower was powerful and easily adjustable which is often not the case in older properties.

The dining room has recently been redecorated and is very light and contemporary. The full English breakfast was very good as were the evening meals we ate there on two occasions.

Bobby (the proprieter) and his team were delightful and could not have done more to make our stay enjoyable. Our grandaughter was befriended by Bobby and his wife's youngest daughter and we spent happy evenings enjoying a drink in the evening sunshine while they played in the hotel garden.

Our grown-up daughters decided at short notice to stay for one night during our stay and a twin room was arranged for them at a very reasonable rate.

This is an old hotel. I understand that it changed ownership at the beginning of this year. I think it is important to understand that it is "work in progress" for the new owners. Not all of the public areas are in pristine condition - but - the important areas to us i.e room, restaurant, garden, bar - are clean and nicely kept. We will definitely use this hotel again.

So, in summary: If you like rectangular hotel rooms, sameness and predictability - I suggest you stay at one of the budget chains. However, if you are looking for a family holiday where comfort, the personal touch and a great location are important, then you should try the Esplanade Hotel.

Room Tip: Room 25 is a nice room.

The reason why i am writing this review is to stop people as being as dissapointed as i was. On the internet the hotel looks fine in reality it was dreadful. We booked a double room for my birthday weekend. It was confirmed over the phone to me that the bathroom would have a shower. On arrival at the rear of the hotel was a car park so we parked the car in there, and entered hotel, when we informed receptionist that we had parked at the rear of the hotel and asked was it okay there she replied "oh you might have to move it from there or else you might get locked in" and if we so wished we can park in a street up the road. Then was promptly told by receptionist we hadnt paid. They did take payment card details of me on the phone when booking but was told we hadnt paid when asked why did you take card details i was told they just take card details incase we booked and didnt turn up.After that mix up was sorted out was given keys to our room , the room was dull, dark and in corner of room large damp patch where wall paper was pealing of wall. Went to look in bathroom just a bath no shower. promptly decided to leave at this point. Went back to reception and was told we could change to another room by then we had seen enough and asked for refund and was told to wait in the bar area for manager to come which a man did arrive and promptly refunded our money we couldnt wait to get out this so called hotel. We did find somewhere else to stay for the weekend but if we didnt my weekend through this hotel could have been disaster.

We stayed for 2 nights over the weekend and were told that we being given a sea view room double because there were not standard rooms available, at a discounted price of £70 per night instead of the usual £85... a good start. We got there are were greeted by name, a nice touch, although never received our free bottle of wine that is quoted on the Esplanade's main website. The other thing that let this place down was the extremely dated rooms and fixtures. We also had a large hole in the plaster work above out bed, which looked like it might give way at any time... not what we were expecting for a room that costs £70 per night. The bathroom was extremely dated, with cheap plastic fittings and a shower that had no power. This hotel claims to be in the middle of a remodel, I can only imagine they hadn't got to our room yet! Breakfast on the other hand was delicious and well stocked, even 15mins before the end of serving. Overall it wasn't a bad stay, I guess we were just expecting a little more for the price.

This hotel had some really nice staff and was friendly enough with a great location, though is in need of updating. The room view was very good and looked out over the sea as we wanted, though the walls of the hotel were so thin that you could hear everything that was said or being watched on the tv in the rooms next door. Also everytime the light switch for thier bathroom was used you could hear the loud click on and off.
The fire doors also need a slow close mechanism on them, as everytime a door was closed, no matter where, we seemed to be able to hear it slam.
The room facilities were dated as I said, but we found it clean and everything was there that we needed, tea/coffee making, towels, tv, hairdrier etc.
Breakfast was OK, but nothing special. The quantity of food was there, but the temperature was a little tepid and the quality of the sausages especially was lacking. Again the service was good, though the girls did seem to struggle on our second day when the hotel was busy and we had to wait quite a long time for tea/coffee etc due to them being overstreached.
On the whole everything was just OK...not a bad hotel but not a great hotel, friendly but noisey and tired.

We have just come back from the Esplanade Hotel and had a great weekend. The room was very clean with great views. The friendly owner i spoke to has recently bought the Hotel and is progressing through a room re vamp and I'm sure he will get their with time. The staff where very attentive and really made us welcome. The bar and breakfast meals where excellent and the drinks were not expensive. Keep up the good work. We will be back. The Barton Family

This is a very dated hotel. We paid £89.00 for our room, with a balcony. Normally, we would say that this was great value, however, the room needs urgent upgrade together with the bathroom. It was a lovely day, rare these days, and we decided to make use of the balcony. Unfortunately, it was covered in birds "poo", had weeds and the cleaners had not removed previous smokers, cigarette butts! This room, has great potential with the balcony, if the present owners spent a few pounds on a "lick of paint", cleaned the balcony and replaced the bathroom furniture, they could command a much higher price. The view is fantastic, with the pier just to the right of the hotel. The breakfast was edible but no offer of extra toast or coffee was offered. The gentleman who served breakfast, you get up and go to the hot food counter, was very pleasant and nice, unlike the waitress. Sorry, not for us and we will not be returning.

Room Tip: No lift with very steep stairs, so if you have mobility problems, you may need to consider your need...
