Back again this month and I noticed the rooms looking a little dated now despite it just 3 years since I stayed. Mould around the bath, paint very chipped, rusting radiators etc.

Still an unpretentious hotel with a nice lounge bar and located right in the centre of town. My room facing west (overlooking the main Rainsford Lane/Parkway junction) a little noisy at night as the Essex chavs with baked bean tin exhaust pipes race past and the night's sleep would have been better with more comfortable pillows, not the cheap foam one's provided.

Friendly staff, good rates via their website so generally good value for a night in Chelmsford.

Do not be put off by exterior of hotel which does not do it justice
We booked in with 2 friends for a weekend break and all felt that it was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in (and we been to many both in this country and abroad) for excellent staff, accommodation and food. Nothing was too much trouble.
Our room was at the front of the hotel and was very clean and comfortable with a lovely bath/shower room, fridge and excellent complimentary tray - with fresh milk available
Toiletries were eco friendly and very nice
All food was of very high standard, and very well presented in a lovely light and airy dining room or bar
Finally the staff - absolutely lovely and very efficient and helpful - well done and thank you

My husband and I renewed our vows and celebrated our pearl wedding anniversary at the County Hotel in August. The staff were fantastic, especially Karen, who organised the whole event and Chris, who was our event organiser on the day. The room looked lovely on the day and the food was great. (I'm a veggie and was not forced to eat pasta in tomatoe sauce for once!)
A number of us stayed overnight and the rooms were very clean and well presented. Ours was spacious, with a beautiful ensuite complete with roll top bath and a full sized separate shower.
Even breakfast was enjoyable in the bright, modern dining room and the staff were discrete and helpful.
Everything about the event lived up to expectations and I will gladly recommend the County Hotel to anyone who is thinking about using it for a celebration in the future.

Room Tip: We had a premier room. It was upstairs at the side of the hotel so was very quiet.

I'd always wondered what this hotel was like - as my work used to put important guests up there in the 1990s. The rooms were ok - while the bathrooms were fantastic - huge and newly renovated. But, the hotel sadly suffers from being an old building and so the problem for us was that you can hear people moving in the corridors and above you and banging about everywhere! This night was probably more noisy than normal as there was a wedding (which made the bar noisy below us) and we were sadly located at the start of the first floor corridor where everyone walks by us etc but it was so bad we checked out the next day and cancelled our second night! Breakfast was very good though - good selection and good service.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the bar and away from the stairs to get a quieter night!

Very comfortable, very well appointed rooms, gigantic breakfast, great bar - and super kind service. The city of Chelmsford is very nice, with good transport connection to London and Stansted.

Room was perfect with great selection of teas, decent size and comfy beds. When in the morning we went to have our breakfast - waitress at the restaurant was rude and had luck of English - her name was Agnes or Agneszka???, do not remember her name, bt she needs to have some courses done to improve her customer service skills!

Room Tip: clean, tidy, big

Last minute booking for business trip. Receptionist was excellent: efficient and friendly. Arrived late, decent parking at the rear of the hotel although the outside seating area of the restaurant does look into the car park. Rooms are basic but clean, the shower didn't work but the bath was OK. Best thing about this hotel is the food. Vegetarian catered for well, although the restaurant's staff had a very basic command of English. Overall, good location and friendly, clean hotel which outweighs the basic standards. I notice that the rating system does not allow a 'good' rating, which this hotel deserves.
