“Great Addition to Chelmsford”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2014

I visited The New London on Saturday night and what a great evening we had. We were greeted by the very friendly owner who has certainly done a fantastic job with this restaurant. Our coats were taken and we were shown to our table. The waitress was quick to take our wine order, and although she seemed a little inexperienced she was very friendly. I had the scallops to start, lamb for main and cheese & port to finish all of which were delicious. At the end of the meal we had drinks in the cosy little bar, and when we received the bill it was a very reasonable £50 per head.
This place really deserves to do well and is just what Chelmsford needed. I will be back for sure.

“Fine dining in stylish surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014

I finally got to check out the New London Restaurant last night, after eyeing it up from afar since it opened 6 months ago. Four of us were booked in for dinner on a Thursday night and were delighted with the whole experience from start to finish.
In terms of decor, the restaurant is contemporary and stylish with a very clean, minimalist feel. Quirky touches give it an artistic edge too, like the various ceramic stag heads on the walls, and a gorgeous ornate mirror above a wood-burning stove in the bar.
The bar area is intimate and cosy. We enjoyed a cocktail each on arrival including a Porn Star Martini (a deliciously sweet passionfruit affair) and Dirty Martini (Martini with olive juice). These cocktails were two of several suggested on the menu as aperitifs and were a nice touch, before being seated through in the main restaurant.
To start, three of us had mushroom soup with truffle oil and walnut bread, which was delicious and very intense tasting. Not like any mushroom soup I'd ever tried before! The other member of my group had scallops with spiced mango and cardamom crumb - all fabulous.
For mains, I had a perfectly cooked fillet steak, served with braised shin of beef on the side, Dauphinoise potatoes and some mini turnips. The braised beef was the star of the show - so rich, juicy and very tender.
Two others in my group had saddle of lamb, minted peas, fondant potato and heritage carrots (which we were intrigued to discover were all different colours - orange, yellow and purple!). The fourth in our party had pork belly with apple puree, black pudding croquet and kale.
We were all really happy with our main courses - perfectly presented, perfectly cooked - just great.
For dessert, I had a vanilla creme brulle which had a very thick sugary crust on top which reminded me of the outside of a toffee apple. The vanilla brulle was creamy and not overly sweet, perfectly complimenting the sugary top. It came with a shortbread on the side. Two others shared a selection of cheese. I'm not into cheese so can't really comment, but they seemed happy enough. The fourth person in the group had a Bakewell tart with almond ice-cream, all lovely and i was quite jealous of it!
From chatting to the staff I learned that everything is homemade from scratch - from the ice-cream, to the shortbread biscuit with my brulle, to the walnut bread that came with my starter.
There was a good selection of wine to choose from too, and we enjoyed a dry Muscadet.
The service was efficient, fast and not too in-your-face.
This is fine dining for foodie types - it's not the type of restaurant you would bring children to; it's definitely a grown up atmosphere for those who like to savour the finer things in life.
Overall, a brilliant experience and worth every penny. I'll look forward to my next trip to the New London.

“New favourite restaurant. ”

Had a great Sunday lunch with family, very reasonable considering the quality.

As a few people have already stated, a cut above the usual restaurant in Chelmsford.

“A decent start”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2014

Chelmsford badly needs a decent restaurant. Something a bit of a cut above the Loch Fyne et al chains. And the old Red Lion pub which was here was not the best. Sam the hairdresser knows Justin (who runs this gaff) and said his catering company was pretty good, so me and the DLW went along last Thursday; sort of a belated Feb 14th and a bit of a tester.

The decor is good (I do like a open fire/stove) and it's big enough without being too big. cocktail starter for the DLW while I glugged a G&T (must be my age). The menu. This being a Thursday, there was the limited choice set price as well as the usual menu. Fair enough choice plus a few wines by the glass (well she likes the white and I prefer the red).

Both our starters and mains were good. We split the dessert which was more the average. Cost about £40/head inc the drinks.

So is this the decent restauarant Chelsmford needs? Almost. The food's good and the cost is fine for the quality. What does need a bit more work is the service. Friendly enough - yes. But on the slow side (the place was moderately busy) and call me Mr Picky but when the waiter spills the drink - a small spillage - I do expect him to come back straight away with a cloth and not 5 mins later after we've mopped it up with the Kleenex.

Would we go back? Yup.

“First Time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2014

This is the first time we have been to this restaurant which I believe has not been open all that long.

The décor was very good & the staff very pleasant, & the guy who made the cocktails new his stuff.

The food was excellent but the bad news was the noise, a table of 20 sat near by and god were they loud.

I don't think so much it was them but the place is very small.

I suggest if you are going make it mid week when not so busy & we will return
