“Visited a couple of weeks ago for a weekend”
Reviewed May 13, 2014

Attending a firework weekend at Notley Golf club, a large number of us stayed here which was close to the venue.
Plenty car parking- looks like a nice toby resturant being built next door- Reception staff were excellent, polite and friendly, with quick check in.
Reception area was clean, modern, and served as a bar area too.

Room (twin)- more than acceptable for the price- clean, well decorated, very spacious compared to Premier Inns and Travel lodges we have stayed in recently.
Bathroom/shower- Clean and plenty fresh towels (i dont go inspecting under toilet rims like!)- complimentary hand/shower gel etc, and shower was hot and powerfull.
Twin beds were comfy with 2 x harder pillows (labled) and 2 x soft ones- No telephone but didnt need one as we had mobiles if we needed them- most places not using telephones in the room now i suppose? makes sence.

Television very adequate with plenty free view, easy to get to know and manage, though we were not in the room much to be honest!

Temperature was a bit cool at night- but easy to up the temp at the control on the wall- i did it too much one night and woke at 3am sweating and had to turn it down!- at least it works lol!

Bar- we enjoyed drinks in the bar on the evening when we returned from the event- poor bar staff!- it suddenly became very busy for them about 10pm until the early hours of the morning (and after 10pm drinks are charged to your room by the way)- Must say special thanks to the bar staff- very friendly, worked hard and dealt with a big group, and the one guy who had too much to drink, who was sent to bed by a few others- couldnt fault the staff who worked, a round of applause for them, did the hotel proud!

Next morning- checkout again, fast and efficient after a very nice breakfast (complimentary)- plenty of choice, and plenty top ups of coffee for some!

Would deffinatley recomend others to stay here if in the area.

Room Tip: First floor room was more than adequate with it being served by a lift from Reception- perhaps away...

Traveling through England and Scotland on holiday with family. We decided to stay in Braintree as it was a good stopping location on our way to Scotland. My family has traveled all over the world and IHG properties are usually very consistent. However, this property definitely needs a remodel, new management, etc. The front check-in area is absolutely beautiful. VERY contemporary and soothing--has the appearance of a spa. However, when we each entered our respective rooms, not so much! We were traveling in early February and the temps were quite cool. Turned on the heat and would not come on. Called down to the front desk and the receptionist attempted to reset the system from there. With no luck she eventually had to come up to the room. We were ready to move to another room, but it finally came on. The beds were comfortable (two twin beds--in the United Kingdom you select either twin beds or full--when you are used to a King size bed, you select twins so you don't kill each other) and we were plenty warm. However, there were numerous little things that were below IHG standards. The phone had seen better days--numerous missing buttons. The TV was so small I thought I was going to need my binoculars to see it! I think IHG needs to send a team in, unannounced, to inspect the property room by room. The room my sister and mother stayed in had NO phone! In case of emergency run down the hall screaming. I do not believe that I would stay in this property if in the area again!

We are sorry that we did not manage to fully meet your expectations during your time with us and apologise for the problems you encountered.

Having read your comments I would appreciate it if you could please contact myself directly at the hotel to share your full feedback, as I do not believe you have been able to do so in this review. I am pleased to read that the issue with the heating was rectified immediately and you will be pleased to hear that we have recently purchased extra phones for our bedrooms.

Room was fine - clean, spacious and well equipped, very clean except for one massive cobweb on ceiling. Bathroom floor was very slippery unless wearing non slip soled shoes. Despite being close to the A120 the road noise was only a very muted hum and not intrusive. Noise within the hotel was not a problem. Staff friendly and helpful.
Where it was a bit of a let down was the breakfast. I know not to expect gourmet from HIX but the lay out of the serving counter was cramped. I didnt see any trays which was a nuisance when getting breakfast for two people or even food and a drink for one. When I got there 0815ish there was only one piece of bread, 2 sausages available. They were replenished after about 10 minutes but people arriving in the meantime missed out.

Was a very limited menu in the evening but there are plenty of eateries within a couple of miles and one in process of being built on the same site.

Don't bother choosing apple juice - absolutely tasteless.

Stayed here while working in the area in May and found the hotel to be very comfortable. The room was quite spacious in my opinion and had a fantastic shower with a seat! Just the thing after a long hard day! Big double bed was comfy and the pillows were big and plump. Coupled with the "black-out" curtains a good night's sleep was never a problem. The only downside was the TV which came with no guide and was set so that the picture was zoomed in rather than the normal letter-box meaning when watching a movie you lost the edges of the screen. Some hotels have normal freeview set up, while others, as in this case, have selected channels which I think is something of the past now.
Only ate at the hotel once, extremely limited choice and for what I paid felt that the food could have been of a better standard. Edible though and filled a hole.
The breakfast. I have seen numerous reviews slating the breakfast, either not much choice, qualilty being poor etc. IT'S FREE! Anything free should be warmly welcomed and if not to your liking should be politely disregarded. I don't know of any other chains that offer a free breakfast but I think its a good idea. On offer were corn flakes, special K, museli, honey nut flakes and a couple of others plus fruit and yoghurts. There were small croissants and pain au chocolat, a small selection of rolls plus white and brown bread which you could toast. The cooked food consisted of sausages, scrambled egg and beans while there were different teas and a cracking coffee machine which did a great latte. Now I'm one for cooked breakfasts and beans have become like the peas of breakfast. There is usually lots of them and they get boring! The sausages were I think a cumberland style but were quite soft and tended to dry your mouth out. The eggs I think were powdered but IT'S FREE! While not brilliant you could at least start the day off with a some food and a nice coffee. Try different combos, sausage butty, beans on toast, croissant au egg!
All in all very good, still a couple of boxes need ticking though

It was easy to find, the staff were fantastic, food was good, rooms lovely, one down side is I think they need more TV channels in the rooms. Other than that flawless, very impressed. Local takeaways, if you don't want hotel food, fuel station just down the road.
I can't thank the staff enough, for being welcoming after a long day, a more than helpful with all enquiries.
I would recommend this hotel all day long, and look forward to staying there again when I'm in the area, I wouldn't stay anywhere else to be honest.

I would not expect too much for 42 English pounds for a nights stay but this hotel has not changed from its Hampton Inn days, basically the same. I'll try to pass judgment based on 42 quid. The room was ok, a bit smelly, had a bed and a rather odd square thing that was a tv. Bathroom was ok, had everything you needed. Internet was free which is a surprise but it was fairly slow and could barely use BBC iplayer, not great.
Where the hotel is your fairly stuck, you cant walk to anywhere. Food wise there choice is very limited and I would not order anything thinking that the front desk person or the manager is likely to be making it but I could be wrong there could be a third person out the back somewhere.
Like most English hotels you are not really treated as a guest/customer but and inconvenience was how it all felt. Next visit to the area will stay again a the Premier Inn A120 its far better for a little more money and has the pub/cavery. The HIE though is more quieter from general/traffic noise being on the A120.

Room Tip: A room on the other side that faces away from the A120.

We stayed in this hotel for just one night and the service was excellent. The room was very clean, staff friendly and helpful, traffic noise minimal. Breakfast was great and the only thing I could complain slightly about was the fact we had a miserable TV signal - but for us this wasn't a major issue. Will definitely stay there again.
