Owner description: Bateman's is a beautiful old sandstone house surrounded rolling Sussex countryside and was home to one of the greatest writers of our time, Rudyard Kipling. Soak up the atmosphere of Kipling's study and enjoy the serenity of the formal garden. Experience the valley which influenced many of Kipling's poems and stories. Open all year round.

Took the kids in the Easter holidays having recently joined the National Trust. What a fantastic day out. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the house. The children especially enjoyed playing in the beautiful gardens. Will definitely visit again soon.

Very pleasant day out with two grand-daughters, whose main aim was to complete the fairly simple Easter Egg trail.
Gardens and lawns were in very good condition.
Property itself is good to visit.
Food at this venue was not too overly priced.

By the time you complete the house visit, and talk to the guides, you really feel that you know Rudyard Kipling. The house is a hidden gem in a beautiful green valley. Rudyard bought much of the surrounding area so all is lush green fields as far as you can see. The house is a real memorial to him and is almost as it would have been when he lived there. The character is superb and because he had money it has been well maintained. The gardens are so relaxing and well looked after too. Definitely worth a visit.

This is our third visit to Bateman's and we always find something in the house and grounds that we missed, The house is full of history and gives the impression that it was a real home. Well worth the visit.
