“Great wedding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2008

Great place for a wedding reception. Venue perfect with plenty of open space for children to run. Beach great for photo opportunities. Food was excellent and the staff very kind and helpful.
Now under new ownership and having received a major upgrade, the hotel will soon lose its previous poor reputation.

You come down for Sunday lunch and there's a classical Pianist playing music for you on your way down, fanastic and not the kind of thing you expect at a 3 star hotel. We loved the food, the service was exceptional. They've also got a terrace there where we sat out in the afternoon and had afternoon tea right next to the beach, you also have a view of the beach from the dining room. The rooms are clean. The hotel has obvously just been refurbished. Kids had a great time in health centre playing in pool while the wife and I were in the jacuzzi. Can't imagine why anyone would write up a bad review of this hotel, although was reading the one below and noticed they got the disabled room and were very unhappy. Bit unfair to judge the whole hotel on this. I understand where they're coming from, but my experiance was completely different. The only bad thing I would say is that they have those Tempur foam matresses in all the rooms, which I know a lot of people like, but I think they're a bit of a weird thing and prefer old fashion spring mattresses.

Our family had a wonderful experience at the Cooden beach Hotel over the last four days. My wife, myself and our four children joined the rest of our family and friends for a family wedding which was held at the hotel. The rooms have been refurbished, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food outstanding. The whole experience is like a life style which we all didnt want to leave. The sunny weather helped boost our enjoyment of the hotels ideal location right on the beach. We all went swimming in the sea before the ample buffet style breakfast which set us all up for the day. The hotel has its own pool, sauna and gym which added to the fun, although children were restricted between 11am- 6pm, hence the early morning swim in the sea. The new patio areas round off the experience, as you can enjoy morning coffee and a paper or food at any time of the day. We have stayed a few times at this hotel in the past for various gatherings but I have to say the new owner has added a new dimension to the whole experience. We were reluctant to leave and cant wait for another excuse to stay at the Cooden Beach Hotel. Perhaps we will try a room in the new annexe next time.

The hotel looked soooo nice on it's website, we stayed in the new part - which was nice the room was airy and light and the bed very comfy. However we wanted a bath tub not a wet room or a disabled room which is what we got......as we going to a wedding and I wanted to shave my legs before I went!!
The manager was rude and un - helpful almost smug that they were fully booked and could help at all!
The Breakfast is a bit poop as well!!
Also full of old people - not that I minded but the menu was catered for old folk!!

  • Liked — the bed was comfy!
  • Disliked — The manager!

Usual hotel, recently renovated with small rooms. Expensive for what you got.

When I knew I was staying here I knew what to expect - and I got it. Traditional sea side hotel for old people. Fantasic location. Pebble beach on one side and train station at the back. So you get a view of the sea, or people waiting for trains. and you get to hear the sea, or trains. some of the rooms are at roof level, this sounds odd - but means you get a view of the roof from your window.
I always get concerned about a hotel when you hear a dog barking in one of the guest rooms - you get it here.
It's one of those places that is just old. the building, the way it operates and the perspective of the staff - even the kids who serve you in the restaurant, the guests.Room was clean. but dated. Had a new flat screen tv on the wall but was small and you couldn't change the angle - so was a bit pointless.
Pointless - that's this hotel.

Highly Recommend

Actually I visited the hotel a couple of years ago with my wife when it was under Jarvis and wasn't that impressed (except that it is right on the beach). I wouldn't have gone back except that a friend told me that it had been completely overhauled. Wow, what a difference. The whole hotel is completely new. Had an amazing time there. Completely different experience. The staff are friendly and the hotel is beautiful. Read some of the other comments, before writing this, they’re outdated.

  • Liked — everything felt like it was new and they had obviously put a lot of effort into the place, also we had great sea views
  • Disliked — we were very happy
