“could be good if they cleaned it a bit better!”
Reviewed June 19, 2009

Took my parents away for a short break and was recommended this hotel by another hotel in the area that was full. Did a quick check on line and the website looks okay, and as is listed by Johansens assumed it would be worth a try. The estate and gardens are really nice, and the food in the restaurant was good.

However, the accommodation we were offered was tired and not clean. We were first offered room 1, which was of good size, but dark and smelt damp. We asked to see others, they only had two others to offer 8 and 10, we settled for 10. However, none of the rooms we saw were really clean. Room 10 had hairs in bath and on bathroom floor, the side of the toilet hadn't been cleaned, dust on surfaces, false eye lash on carpet behind bed, cobwebs on ceiling and around window frames.

Our experience was disappointing and if I had felt there were other options in the area I would have not even have stayed but having already rung around most things in the area were full.

I think that this hotel could do much better and hopefully it will try....

This hotel is set in beautiful Kentish countryside. Several centuries ago it was the site of a gunpowder factory - hence the name. We had an executive room with lovely views of a lake. Tha staff were attentive and helpful. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Breakfast was ordinary. The gardens were tended by full time gardeners and everything looked lovely. I did see two smelly dogs inside the house. They were not allowed in the restaurant.

Powdermill Hotel is located on beautiful grounds that my partners and I enjoyed exploring and picnicing on. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast and dinner we had there were very nice and the food was quality.
Unfortunately I don't think I would recommend a stay at this hotel because we didn't have hot water for an entire day. I would say this was just a fluke but after reading previous reviewers who also did not have hot water, it seems to be an ongoing problem.
For 100 pounds a night I think you can find an equally as nice hotel that does not have problems providing their guests with hot water.
If you do decide to take a chance, I would call and see how fully booked the hotel is. If it's not that booked they might have enough hot water to go around.

We stayed for 2 nights on the wine & dine and stay for free offer, very good value. Food was of a high standard, the staff in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast both times were friendly and efficient. We had booked a basic room which was good, appeared clean, was plenty big enough, and pleasantly furnished. The hotel and staff appeared dog friendly which is always a good sign. Only negative point, it was cold in the restaurant, maybe not surprising as the weather was extremely cold at the time, but some extra heaters would have helped. Will most likely stay again.

Hotel in beautiful country setting with small lake within 20 ish minute walk into historic and charming town of Battle. Hotel built within 1720's, so has period charm. Staff are extremely nice and friendly. Good restaurant serving homemade bread. Dog-friendly. Took advantage of a special deal for January 2009, making the hotel excellent value for money. A great hotel for 3-star status. Minor refurbishment could definitely put this hotel in the high 4 star league. Our bedroom was very clean and well-presented. Moulton-Brown toiletries in bathroom.

  • Liked — Charming hotel with period features and beatiful country stting. We could take our dog.
  • Disliked — This hotel was so close to being excellent but could have benefited from some minor refurbishments.

We arrived to find dogs everywhere, our room had dirty sofas, dirty net curtains and burns on the curtains, poor standard of accommodation, food was something out of ramseys nightmares, menu wierd to say the least, and when we asked for an alternative menu we were told there was not one, however, the next morning we found one in the room. Would not recommend to anyone, however, the setting of the hotel is idealic pity they dont know how to run a hotel,

  • Liked — leaving the next morning at 7.30am
  • Disliked — cleanliness, decor, rats outside the window

Go to this hotel if you like eating the same food every evening. We stayed there for three nights and the menu did not change. The main course dishes were three fish, salmon, haddock, cod, and three meat, beef, pigeon, duck. Not what I'd call a good choice.

There was a vegetarian menu, available on request, but since other requests were ignored, there didn't seem much point in asking for it!

I had fish on the first two evenings. By the third I had had enough fish so chose the beef. The waiter was snooty when I said I preferred it well done and said that it was my fault for wanting it overcooked when, on being asked if 'everything was all right with the meal', I said it was a bit tough!

The setting of the hotel is very nice, but I don't think I would stay here again.

  • Liked — Its situation.
  • Disliked — The boring menu.
