The only time I've been in here, it came across as cheap... and not in the nice sense. I get the feeling that it could be a great place, but needs some love and energy put into it. Perhaps one to watch for improvements?

Much changed since our last visit a few years ago, and, let's face it, Southwold's appeal is that nothing much changes. We called for a nostalgic lunch, remembering it as a busy but friendly seaside "local"; dark & comfy with a chattering mix of locals and holiday makers, a good menu and local beers.

Now it has light, bright, contemporary decor and layout with a nod to tradition in a few exposed beams. The local beers remain with 3 Adnams brews but the lunch menu was very limited - only 3 mains. They were hot & tasty and reasonably priced, and the service was quick & friendly, but there was no trace of the old atmosphere.

What let the lunchtime experience down completely, though, was the loud pop music from Absolute Radio on the big screen TV. Great for a lively evening session but overpowering for us, and the other 3 people who made up the lunch clientele. Lost its direction? I'm a great admirer of Adnams, its beers, its ethos and its pubs, but this one seems to have lost its way.

Having visited last summer and leaving very disappointed we decided to give this place one more chance after hearing it was under new management. The place looked much cleaner, and they were offering 3 courses for £15. We both had the excellent beer battered fish and chips, and my wife finished with a lemon tart. Including drinks it came to just over £20, which we were more than happy with, given it was the best we have had in quite a while. One little moan, the carpet has seen better days. All in all though we will return!

Could do with an open fire to make it more welcoming, manager run, so no one seems to care, decor very cold looking.

On a cold snowy evening we were greeted by two very friendly , courteous young men. They made us feel welcome and fed us with good basic pub grub. We left satisfied and very well looked after.
