Southwold is a lovely place, and Sutherland House is a great way to stay there. The staff are brilliant, the food is very good, the rooms charming, the beds comfortable and it is excellently placed, being handy for everything and yet at the quiet end of the High St.

Room Tip: There is a small room, which costs a lot less than the others. Good for a budget option, but otherwi...

We have just had a lovely couple of days in Southwold, we stayed at Sutherland House on the High Street. What a beautiful intimate place to stay, nothing was too much trouble. We were rang the evening before and asked what time we would be arriving and were told just to drop our bag off if we needed to, but when we got there at 12.00 we were told the room was ready so we were shown straight up.
We stayed in the Thomas Camell room, which was so sweet, clean and bright with a clean up to date bathroom, still managing to maintain the atmosphere of a 15th century house with some original features.
The breakfast menu was quite extensive which included haddock, salmon as well as every type of cooked egg available in a champagne sauce as well as the good old English breakfast in beautiful surroundings featuring an inglenook fire place.
All the staff were very welcoming, there was no rush and we felt very well looked after. We will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Don't be put off with the smaller room as its still very intimate.

Arrived battling through the winds and our mood was immediately lifted when we were informed that we had been upgraded to a suite. The rooms, yes rooms, were huge and as this is an old building, full of character. There is attention to detail here like fresh milk and high quality toiletries. The towels are huge and soft and the bed comfortable. The whole suite was spotless. Breakfast was all local produce cooked well. Staff are friendly and the owner very down to earth. It is a real combination of excellent 5 star accommodation and 5 star service. Oh, the location is perfect too, smack, bang in the centre of town.

Room Tip: The suite was worth the published price

This hotel is a top notch restaurant with four excellent period rooms each of which is furnished in an individual style. If you are looking for a really good nights sleep after a five star dinner at a reasonable price you can do no better. All the staff are down to earth with a no nonsense, or stuffy, approach. Breakfast is taken at a relaxed time and served in the excellent dining room.
Of course it helps that the hotel is situated in one of the most charming of Suffolk seaside towns with its interesting museum, lighthouse, brewery, shops and seafront. The fish courses offered included bass, red mullet, plaice with crab, halibut, haddock,, skate etc; a real fine selection and my favorite pudding was a delicious apple and balckberry crumble. It was difficult to fault any part of our stay...

Room Tip: All of the above rooms are excellent. A fourth room is also well fitted out but smaller.

Booked online when looking for a reasonably priced place in Southwold which is notoriously not cheap. Got the large single/small double which was absolutely fine for a couple of nights. Larger rooms look splendid and will be trying one of them next time. However, where the place wins is in the welcome you get, the staff were all really friendly, attentive and helpful and, as you would expect from a restaurant with rooms, the food was excellent. We ate in on the first evening and took advantage of the beautiful fish that was on offer. Breakfast was a real treat because although they offered the full english, they also had eggs benedict and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and a beautiful smoked haddock and poached egg dish with a champagne sauce (who's name escapes me). I am sure we will be staying again.

Room Tip: Only stayed in the smallest room so can't comment on the larger rooms but we backed onto the chu...

I stayed there for a night with the wife and kids and we had dinner in the restaurant. We were all made incredibly welcome and the food, both dinner and breakfast was out of this world. We stayed in the suite and it was just superb. The bedroom was very well appointed, was incredibly comfortable and we had plenty of space. We are planning our next trip!

Just came back from a fantastic night away at the Sutherland in the Duke of York room which is incredible old, dating back to the 1600's when James II stayed there, and it really was 'fit for a king'. From the warm and friendly welcome through to the scrumptious soft bed, fantastic decor, to the well prepared breakfast we were made to feel very special. We hope to see you again as soon as we can. Thanks once again for your amazing customer service.
