Owner description: Behind the walls of our Victorian building in the heart of Southwold sits one of the most modern breweries in the UK. Over the past few years the brewery has undergone a complete refurbishment with the replacement of the brewstream being the most recent update. This state-of-the-art installation recovers 100% of the heat and steam from each brew, 90% of which is used to reheat the next. This reduces the amount of gas needed during the brewing process by 30%. The new system can also brew larger batches in less time, making more efficient use of raw materials. It is also very efficient in water usage with a ratio of 3.2 pints of water to every pint of beer, compared to the industry average of 8. It even cleans itself and we're trying to programme it to make the tea too. But don't just take our word for it, book a tour, come and meet one of the brewery team and see it all for yourself. Please book ahead online for by calling our booking line to avoid disappointment.

We have done brewery tours all over, and found that while we were looking at much the same equipment, the information about Adnams efforts in brewing and sustainability was great. It was what made the difference to other tours. There was a little tasting at the end. We could try the ales and the wine but this is not the tour to go on if you want to start drinking heavily for free.

Thank you for your review and we're delighted that you think our tour stood out from the other brewery tours you have been on. We try to give samples in measures that we feel brings across the style, flavours and aromas of our beers to our visitors. However, we are aware that many visitors may need to drive after their tour and we would not want to put anyone over the drink-drive limit. This is the main reason we give you a free bottle of beer to take home!

We had booked a brewery tour online and were worried that it might be cancelled as Adnams usually set a minimum of 6 people before going ahead with the tour. However, when we arrived, Lucy said that even though two people had cancelled, meaning that there would be just the two of us on the tour, she was happy to go ahead with it. So, we had a very personal, informative tour, followed by a relaxed tasting of a number of beers and a visit to the Adnams shop for a tasting of wines and spirits. My only minor criticism would be that the free bottle of beer you receive at the end of the tour is Sole Bay, which at 2.7% is not a typical Adnams beer: a bottle of Adnams bitter would be appreciated more.

Thank you for your review and we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your tour. Rest assured, the free bottle of Adnams Sole Star you received is a proper Adnams beer! Hopefully by now you will have tried it and found it to be full of flavour and bitterness despite it's 2.7% abv. However, if you had mentioned this to Lucy she would have happily exchanged the beer to Southwold Bitter for you.

This was an excellent tour, our guide was the recently retired head engineer who obviously loved the Brewery and his years working there. He was extremely knowledgeable and also able to put across some quite complicated information in a form that we could all understand. Adnams has put not only a huge investment but also a huge amount of thought into the recent refit of its brewery, giving it amazing 'green' credentials. By using heat exchangers wherever possible, they are able to cut their energy use by an impressive 30%. They recycle leftover hops to pigs and yeast to a specially built anaerobic digester, thus sending methane gas back into the National Grid. It was great to find that this business is so aware of the environment, not just the bottom line. The beer tasting was good fun and we also learned the difference between bottled beer and proper 'keg-conditioned' beer, something I hadn't appreciated before. Then on to their great shop just up the road where we had a wine tasting and also some of Adnam's new distillery products. The 'Broadside' spirit was fantastic and we came away with a bottle for Christmas. All in all it was superb value and a very enjoyable morning.

Chris was very informative and answered all our questions well. The tour is just the right mix of video, touch and sniff and wandering! The tasting was good fun although I would prefer smaller tots of more beers as the drivers have to limit their intake. The shop and cafe are brilliant and you could quite easily do your Christmas shopping in one go here. I would just query whether £12 per person is a bit too expensive but the tours fill up so others may disagree.
