Owner description: Behind the walls of our Victorian building in the heart of Southwold sits one of the most modern breweries in the UK. Over the past few years the brewery has undergone a complete refurbishment with the replacement of the brewstream being the most recent update. This state-of-the-art installation recovers 100% of the heat and steam from each brew, 90% of which is used to reheat the next. This reduces the amount of gas needed during the brewing process by 30%.The new system can also brew larger batches in less time, making more efficient use of raw materials. It is also very efficient in water usage with a ratio of 3.2 pints of water to every pint of beer, compared to the industry average of 8. It even cleans itself and we're trying to programme it to make the tea too. But don't just take our word for it, book a tour, come and meet one of the brewery team and see it all for yourself. Please book ahead online for by calling our booking line to avoid disappointment.

“Adnams Brewery Tour”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

This was an excellent tour, our guide was the recently retired head engineer who obviously loved the Brewery and his years working there. He was extremely knowledgeable and also able to put across some quite complicated information in a form that we could all understand. Adnams has put not only a huge investment but also a huge amount of thought into the recent refit of its brewery, giving it amazing 'green' credentials. By using heat exchangers wherever possible, they are able to cut their energy use by an impressive 30%. They recycle leftover hops to pigs and yeast to a specially built anaerobic digester, thus sending methane gas back into the National Grid. It was great to find that this business is so aware of the environment, not just the bottom line. The beer tasting was good fun and we also learned the difference between bottled beer and proper 'keg-conditioned' beer, something I hadn't appreciated before. Then on to their great shop just up the road where we had a wine tasting and also some of Adnam's new distillery products. The 'Broadside' spirit was fantastic and we came away with a bottle for Christmas. All in all it was superb value and a very enjoyable morning.

“What a great company”
Reviewed November 9, 2012 via mobile

Chris was very informative and answered all our questions well. The tour is just the right mix of video, touch and sniff and wandering! The tasting was good fun although I would prefer smaller tots of more beers as the drivers have to limit their intake. The shop and cafe are brilliant and you could quite easily do your Christmas shopping in one go here. I would just query whether £12 per person is a bit too expensive but the tours fill up so others may disagree.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate that the tastings on the tour can be a bit limiting for those who have to drive, which is why we give you a free bottle of beer to take home! Great to hear that you enjoyed your tour so much.

“Good tour but not the best so far”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

We've done a few beer tours ( for hubbie's birthday each year).

This was a good tour, but felt that as it was the last one of the day, the lady was in a bit of a rush to get it done.

It was interesting and the beer and wine tasting was fun, but the whole thing was quite dis-jointed and out of sequence. They are not wrong when the say pace and location will not suit all. Lots of stairs and wandering up and down the street in the area ( it was cold but clear the day we went, not sure it woudl be much fun in the pouring rain!)

That said, hubbie thoroughly enjoyed it, but will still say that Ringwood is a better tour, with a much more enthusaistic speaker.

Thank you for your review. We're glad to hear that overall you enjoyed the tour. We do make visitors aware prior to booking that there are lots of stairs and gantrys as well as the need to go outside to move between our brewery buildings. I'm sorry you felt this made the tour disjointed but the tour does follow the processes required to make our beer from the grain to the barrel. We would be grateful if you could get in touch with us to let us know when your tour was so we can address the comments you made about the tour guide.

“Cheers”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a great two hour tour which includes tastings at the end. Not only of interest to the beer drinker but also to those keen on chemistry and social history.
You will not only enjoy it but learn a lot as well.
Of all the beers it was "Ghostship" that came back to haunt us -- again and again.
