Booked in for dinner on way back from London after 3 nights in a 5 star Nightsbridge hotel.
The food we had in the Sutherland was better than anything we had in London at four times the price. The homemade paprika bread and local organic rapeseed oil was a revalation!
The star of the show was the local steak and baked local vegetables..off the scale !!!!The staff were amazeing--friendly and knowledgeable..nice background music and open fire to create an enchanting mood..would eat here every week if we didnt live 300 miles away!!!!

Decided, without booking to have lunch at this restaurant on a chilly Sunday.

In the light of our experience, I find it very difficult to understand the overwhelmingly excellent reviews.

We chose the place because it looked comfortable enough, two rosettes for culinary excellence from the AA and a trip advisor award were displayed at the door.

We were shown to a small table for two near a cheerful fire. The service was friendly and attentive throughout.

The table was bare wood and the cutlery was given to us wrapped in a paper napkin. So perhaps it is fair say that the presentation was not pretentious.

The menu was quite short with a choice from perhaps five starters and five main courses at reasonable sounding prices.

A crab salad starter consisted of just three canapé sized morsels attractively presented with the usual squirt of balsamic. Each piece of crab and sun dried tomato was placed on what looked like a potato crisp. It was neither satisfying nor exciting.

A bowl of mussels was rather a meagre portion. The dish was not hot, the sauce rather too creamy, chopped onion and garlic seemed to be raw. Again a disappointment.

A dish of roast pork again was not hot. A piece of crackling little bigger than a postage stamp, meat that seemed like reheated catering stuff, dehydrated roast potatoes that surely must have been reheated and undercooked vegetables with a tasteless gravy made for one forgettable main course.

The other; fish and chips with mushy peas was nowhere near as good as our local chippy churns out. Both the fish and the chips looked like they had come out of the freezer. The tiny lump of mushy peas was dry and cold.

We finished off with a perfectly good ice cream and chocolate brownie.

With two glasses of wine and a bottle of water, the bill for two came to just under £65 excluding service.

When we arrived home, I was really surprised to see the number of excellent reviews here.

Perhaps they were just having a bad day, but they were certainly not rushed off their feet and the service was pretty good.

It was then, the small matter of food, although I would also suggest that waiting staff should wear a little more than just a pair of tights.

Dear Johnny C, Royston,
Having been at the helm of Sutherland House for the last 6 years, we know only too well that we are only as good as our worst meal served. To hear on this occasion that not only was the meal poor but also cold, was incredibly disappointing. We make great efforts to ensure that we aim for 100% customer satisfaction in all areas and I am pleased to say the vast majority of the time we do achieve this, however, it does sound like we failed on this occasion.

Whilst I am disappointed that when asked at the time you did not mention any of the problems you experienced, there is no excuse for you food to be served cold and if this was the case you obviously you have every right to be less than satisfied, and for this I apologise profusely.

I do hope you will be able to tell from my response, how important we take guests feedback and I hope that this one bad experience would not deter you from coming back to us in the future, enable us to show you that this was a one off, and give you confidence in our restaurant again.

With best wishes

We had a really delicious evening meal at Sutherland House at the beginning of November 2013. The service was excellent - discretely attentive. We also like the atmosphere of this historic house with a lovely fire blazing on a cold, windy November evening!

We both had a starter (delicious homemade bread to accompany), main and, unusually, a desert. All excellent and very well presented. I would definitely recommend for an evening meal. Haven't had lunch there but would expect it to be just as good. We stayed there last year for four nights and that was good too but fancied self catering this year for a change.

I was surprised to read the previous review of this restaurant as my husband and I had lunch there today and had a completely different experience.
We were visiting the area and thought Sutherland house looked very nice and the menu appetising.
We had the tapas selection king prawns in garlic (delicious) seafood chowder full of fresh local fish, meatballs, gorgeous bread warm freshly baked, all washed down with excellent, reasonably priced wine. The King prawns in the Tapas were very large and plentiful and for £4 per dish, you really couldn't complain.
The crabmeat was all white, which again is not often served in a restaurant for such a reasonable price.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and all in all it was a very enjoyable lunch.
I will definitely visit there on my next visit to Suffolk.

From the quirky delicious tasters before the starters arrived, through the beautifully presented main course to the scrummy pudding, this was a 5 star meal. A log fire added to the atmosphere in the intimate restaurant of this old, historic building. Staff were attentive and genuinely friendly, but not at all intrusive and were really keen to ensure a great meal experience was had by all. Thanks to all at restaurant and hotel. We will be back!!!!
