“Nice Place, and Good for a Fast, Filling Meal”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2012

The Half Moon is a Hungry Horse Pub/Restaurant run linked to the Greene King Brewery. In general, all Hungry Horse establishments are in the “cheap and cheerful” category, with inexpensive, filling fare.

The service at the Half Moon is good (though it is an order at the bar, be served at the table system). The serving and bussing staff do a good job of checking on customers’ needs, and keeping the place clean. The dining room has been renovated fairly recently (last couple of years), and still is “up to date” in décor, with several features with an “American flavor [sic]”, presumably in honour of the US Air Force personnel and their families that seem to make-up a large portion of the diners.

On the few occasions I have eaten at the Half Moon, the food has been well prepared, tasty, and generally well presented. My latest visit was slightly below par for them however. The salmon fish cakes were indeed well cooked, had some moisture and yet were still firm; the salad however was basically tossed onto the plate (admittedly it was a busy “kids eat for £1” night), and the baked potato was blackened on one side. The potato was still okay, though a little chewy on the blackened side.

All in all it was an okay experience, and in line with the expectations associated with the price, and the occasion. 3 1/2 out of 5 (but the system limits me to whole numbers).
