We had Sunday lunch (my wife aand two friends)at this hotel yesterday of which to put it bluntly was, disgusting! The rib of beef was cut with a razor blade it very fatty, the veg was soggy the yorkshire pud like rubber. The starter (Prawn cocktail)had no sauce with it and was tasteless, the dessert wasnt too bad(I dont think you can ruin trifle)Afterwards we were treated to a sponge cake of which was actually stale. With drinks etc the bill was over £100.The reason I did not complain at the time was because it was our friends wifes birthday who is wheelchair bound after suffering a severe stroke and did not want to make a fuss and spoil her day.The service of the staff was very good.

Have stayed here a few times as this is the only real Hotel in Felixstowe, however the lack of competition shows.

The staff are all friendly and the breakfast was very good. The public rooms are all in a fantastic condition and well maintained unfortunatley the bedrooms are not.

The bathroom was in a digusting condition, black mould around the bath and the shower curtain was grim, covered in red and black mould which when the hot water from the shower hit it produced a vile smell. so much so that is was overpowering. The bedroom had peeling wallpaper and stains on the ceiling but was a good size.

I dont usually complain (read my other reviews) but the bedrooms in the back of the hotel need serious attention for £80 per night bed and breakfast I would at least expect a clean bathroom! There is no excuse for the state of the shower curtain and bathroom I do have photo's but will not up load them here. I dont like leaving negative reviews but I just hope the hotel reads this review and implements some better house keeping procedures.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the front Victorian part of the hotel, avoid the 1960's extension out the back...

Having read some previous reviews I wanted to add our experience... yes, it is not modern, despite recent changes it remains one of a dying breed of hotels which have a sort of shabby elegance, the restaurant is clean and spacious, the serving staff are first rate and the food is very good indeed, 3 courses for twenty two pounds and a reasonably priced wine list... our large rooms were clean and newly decorated, the bathroom was clean but old fashioned which only added to the charm. There is a large library for reading and a good sized bar, this is a gem of a hotel for people who enjoy old style residences.

Room Tip: Try and stay in the old part.

We spent our anniversary at the Orwell, after I wrongly booked a twin I was upgraded for free to a very nice suite with sofa, tv, bathroom and large posh furnitures. The cleanliness was good, not immaculate but to be honest we didn't give them time to clean (do not disturb if you know what I mean). Excellent breakfast, cooked and continental was absolutely marvellous.

Good service but the booking clerk was poorly trained. We wanted to use a hotel voucher, the receptionist said yes, over the phone, the manager said no when we arrived.

The breakfasts were good and the room wasw comfortable.

We have stayed at a few hotels in Felixstowe and this by far has to be the best.A wonderfull Victorian Hotel full of charm. The rooms are very spacious and clean with a mixture of modern television to a trouser press. The Restaurant not only has fantastic decor but the food is excellent
and it is nice to get served by staff that care for ther customers, this also applys to the bar staff. All in all we would recomend this Hotel to anyone who wants a pleasant charming Hotel with a great atmosphere and exceptional service at a resonable price.
