“beyond terrible, the flying boat bar.”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

My husband, daughter and I went to the Flying boat bar, seemingly part of the Marlborough Hotel in Felixstowe, for some dinner. It was very quiet when we went in. We ordered gammon with the works, a double burger, and a ham sandwich. It was all horrid, the Gammon was off, the fat that the chips had been cooked in was old and dirty and tasted vile, even my husband complained, who normally eats anything and everything. My daughter who loves chips put a chip in her mouth then took it straight back out again, her sandwich had more fat in it than ham and the whole lot was awful. The beef burger was far from its description, my husband had one bite and couldn't eat anymore. We literally left the food as it came. We just left, will never go there again was a complete waste of money, the worst meal I have ever had. I can't comment on the Hotel side of things but if thats what the food would be like then I'd never stay thee on that basis alone. Talking to one of the two members of staff I actually saw was difficult as his English was incredibly poor.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights during August and it left us with a good impression. Having used extensively two and three stars hotels around Europe I can say that Marlborough was in line with our expectations. It is not a luxury hotel (so don’t except other than freeview channels on tv), the lift is small and it is a bit dated, but it checked all the essentials in our list: clean room and bed, functional bathroom, very friendly staff, decent prices, excellent location and good food for breakfast. The hotel also has an agreeable lounge, good for socializing. Overall I would recommend this hotel, especially for short stays, such as weekend breaks. Don’t forget to ask for a room with sea view, if available.

This review is sent on behalf of my mother & her friend who stayed there in August 2012.
The lift only takes 2 people, not big enough for a wheelchair and no bedrooms downstairs. Our bedroom ceiling the wallpaper was peeling off, mould in the shower, only good thing was that the water was hot. No air conditioning in the bedroom only in the dining room, which when on was too cold! The food was atrocious cottage pie very dry no gravy in it like the fish pie with no sauce, roast dinner was very tough in some cases full of gristle. During our stay there was coach party staying so they were given preferential treatment, other guests were asked to wait for their meals at night i.e. eating at about 8.00 which for OAP's is far too late, if you ate with the coach people the menu was limited. The staff were friendly and helpful but harried as they had to turn their hands to various other jobs, they could have done with more staff as 3 people to serve 60/70 people was not enough.
Would not recommend this hotel to anyone!

Stayed 3 nights at week end Friday to Sunday on the plus side the decoration seemed clean tidy and fairly new, our room was good size with sea view with two chairs rather than the usual one that leaves one sitting on the bed.
Bath room was large and newly re-tiled, bed was slightly lumpy. windows facing south in a scorching weekend made the room rather hot and top hung windows funnel in the rising heat.
Advertised as disabled friendly there was threshold at the front door though the steps had been concreted to for a ramp some time, the threshold would be not to high for large wheel scooter or wheel chair and care, there was timber from a ramp that had been remove so it had been better with the materials still in the sun lobby if you wanted to relay.
On the bad side the disabled toilet for the ground floor was useless as the door binded on the frame and could not be closed or bolted.
The cubicle in the gents was no better, a replacement bolt had a square profile and the side panel too smaller round hole to allow the door to be bolted, suppose that proves you cant put a square peg in a round hole.
The bar was cleared the first night by the worst record ever and complaint to the barman had no effect, bar food is not recommended and we gave up waiting for a coffee while the barman complained on his phone the nothing had gone right and he thought of walking out.
Dinner set 3 course with no option, breakfast not bad for the price.
Its the only hotel on the front and looks impressive considering the seafront has seen better days, would not repeat the visit needs a good handy man and a keen manager as the owners seem to keeping the place up to date.
Finally the 2 person lift is the smallest ever seen but eraser than the stairs.

Stayed two nights and only stayed the second night as couldn't get a room anywhere else at such short notice!

Old, dated, 'staying at your grannys' (hubby's contribution!) type hotel which could do with a complete refurb or a visit from the Hotel Inspector!

Uncomfortable bed, hard pillows, 'sticky' floor,tv with limited channels, lino floor in bathroom which looked like it needed a good clean and I actually cleaned the bath before getting in!

Only 'good'ish thing was breakfast was hot (lacked choice though) and we had it in our room on the second morning as didn't see point going down when we knew what we wanted.

Would not recommend this hotel and after reading some of the comments where people rated this place more than average, I question if they actually stayed in the same hotel as us!!

Totally recommend the Alex for food though...gorgeous and lots of fresh fish dishes on the menu.

Room Tip: Don't stay here is the only advice I can give!

Nice and friendly staff, rooms were clean and breakfast was delicious.
We had a really good time there and we had rooms with sea view which was great. Large lounge were you can sit all night chatting with your friends.
Pros: Location, Food, Large car park
Cons: Would need some updating

Room Tip: Rooms on the other side of the bar.

Not really suitable for OAP's....the one& only lift for the Hotel takes only 2 persons at one time...to get a wheelchair & carer in together was impossible which made life difficult specially when you can't stand...also there was no "walk in" shower, so there is no disabled bedrooms! I believe there was one on the 3rd floor but the lift only went up to the 2nd floor!! The breakfasts were either lukewarm or cold! evening meals were hot but not much imagination in the menu. The staff were friendly but very overworked & had to be "jack of all trades" Hotel needs money spending on it, improvement on decor & employing more staff.

Room Tip: Look at the room before staying if possible
