“Lovely seaside retreat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

My husband and I stayed in a 'good' room and had lunch and dinner at the Ship. The rooms are clean, comfortable and have everything you need but it's a shame they haven't been done with much flair or imagination - bit of a missed opportunity I think. However, to be so close to the sea and then to be able to wander into the lovely bar, what a treat. The Dunwich coast and heath are stunning, so rugged and unspoilt. The Ship is right next to the beach, perfect for a pre-dinner stroll. The bar is cosy and very relaxed, there's no fine dining or formality. Lovely, hearty selection of food and a really nice atmosphere. Great value all round.

My husband and I stayed at The Ship on a Sunday evening using a special offer of £97.50 for the room which included a food and drink allowance of £60.00 which was excellent.
We stayed in Wood End which is a quirky room in the eves of the building. The room was simple with white bed linen. The paint work could do with a touch up but the room was clean and tidy. The en-suite was small but has an excellent shower. A couple of areas for improvement in the bathroom would be tightening up the screws on the bathroom shelf, towel rail and toilet roll holder.
Breakfast the following morning was very good.
Lovely location.

I have to say I was disappointed. We usually stay in Aldeburgh for a similair price. Our Friday night stay with dinner cost £202 including a bottle of wine and a couple of beers. The drink was nice and the fish and chips too but the cheese board at £7 plus was poor. The bathroom was freezing cold and the bed small, (we are spoilt with a King size). The staff without exception were excellant. Oh and as dog owners and lovers we didn't appreciate the wet and smelly dogs sitting in close proximity to us as we ate!

We drove through snow blizzards to get there, but it was well worth it. This lovely old pub in Dunwich serves excellent food, sourced locally, using only free range eggs and the finest fresh ingredients in their varied and extensive menu. We were made to feel welcome immediately, and nothing was too much trouble. Even down to finding decaf teabags for me (as I am caffeine intolerant). The room was comfortable tastefully decorated in neutral colours and beautifully furnished, with under floor heating in the bathroom.
Gorgeous eating and drinking area's...the main bar had a big wood burning stove, and the pub is dog friendly, providing water for them to drink, and even cleaning up their little accidents! We felt really rested and looked after and would definitely recommend this pub hotel to all age groups.

A weekend break to the Ship at Dunwich has been on our to do list for many years.
So we pushed the "boat" out and opted for their "Best Room" to make maximise our experience.

At £127.50 per night B&B our expectations had been set.
So arriving on a windswept evening to be shown a small wooden chalet at the rear of the pub we were quite disappointed.
The room was not as expected, nowhere to sit together we took it in turns to use the one chair stuck in the corner.
This was an £80 per night room at the most.

A tiny cheap TV had been bolted halfway up a wall, hanging there ready to hit your head on every time you went to bed. The room could do with a lick of paint, paint peeling and the shower a bit black round the edge may just need a good scrub.

On the Friday evening the meal was 100% big hit and we enjoyed the award winning food and Saturday breakfast good.
So disappointed room, but the food made up for it yes?

So we decided not to venture out again, and try something else form the menu on the Saturday night. So here is the miss, maybe a different chef, but the game pie was mush and the £16.96 Steak was so tough, it was not edible. With a crowded bar it was too much effort to queue up again and complain.
Breakfast on Sunday was another miss, reheated bacon and broken eggs demonstrated a lack of care.

So an expensive hit a miss experience.
Come on guys at the ship, put in more effort and give the room at the back a makeover.
Oh, and don’t call a £250 B&B weekend break "Best" unless you deliver Best.

Sorry, I wish I had been able to give it the thumbs up, but all I can give is 50/50.

Room Tip: Ask if there are chairs to relax on in the "Best" rooms, or do you have to sit on the bed?

Very much enjoyed a mid week deal offered by the owners. Excellent main dishes and also the starters were more than adequate for a mid day snack, excellent choice and very speedy service. Very full choice of breakfast menu, all with local produce. Our room, Beacon Hill was very peaceful, overlooking the rear beer garden, but could be more noisy in the summer season. Located very close to the beach and a good base for long coastal walks, and the Minsmere RSPB centre. If you enjoy a peaceful location, especially out of season, go there.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the room over the kitchen !

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
