Been several times but this will be the last. The food has gone downhill and the service was terrible. Staff more interested in talking with each other than serving food. Poor quality ingredients with a frizen / microwave taste.

There has apparently been a change of ownership, although the staff have remained essentially the same. After eating at the George on a weekly basis since January 2013 there has been a marked decline in the quality of the ingredients used to produce a very similar menu. The atmosphere has declined due to regulars voting with their feet. What a pity, this will take a long time to recover a reputation.

An old worldly atmosphere surrounds the bar and restaurant which needs updating and brought into the 21st Century. Though appearing to live in the past and a popular venue with the locals and farming community, prices of the drinks were on par with city prices in the South East. Expensive!! The menu had a good selection and was fairly priced. Overall, the food was well cooked and decent portions were served. The chips were first class!!! Best I've had for some time. However I did struggle to find prawns (4) and other seafood ( a few small shrimp and 3 /4 other tiny pieces of fish ) in my Seafood Linguine, tasty but disappointing in content. The service, though not over friendly, was acceptable. Altogether, a venue that, needs overhauling and as in a school report, COULD DO BETTER.

Seemed popular with the locals...which doesn't say much! Just about everything came with melted cheese on top. Not far off school dinners.

In a previous review, we gave the Sunday carvery a deserved slating, whilst acknowledging that the food in the bar had always been good. Regrettably, this also appears to have slipped back. The food was OK, desserts a bit below par; but the prices, though not high, giving the overall impression that the menu had been done to a price.

The service was not good enough. Delivery of food was a bit slow, but the staff were just a bit gormless. Being asked towards the end of the meal if everything was all right, no problem, but five minutes later (when we had all finished) asking the same thing, then walking off without clearing the plates? Then taking away three, and not coming back for the other three? Four desserts were ordered, two delivered (eventually), then several minutes before the other two arrived. Same thing with the coffees; two delivered, the other two some time later.

If you're tired or had a bad day/week and just want food put in front of you, it's probably fine, but you really do not want to consider eating at the George a treat any more. It needs a lot of people to leave it alone for several weeks until the management get the message.
