“lovely B&B”
Reviewed May 30, 2011

We have stayed at this B&B before and have found it to be of a good standard.
The rooms are very nice and clean, with en-suite facilaties.
The owners are a lovely couple and make you feel very welcome.
Breakfast was lovely with a good choice of menu.
The location is excellant with a 10 minute walk to the sea front at Sheringham.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and quiet

My late brother and I first stayed in the Melrose in 1998, and he and I have stayed there each year since, usually three times per year. John and Suzanne have always been friendly, and the standards have always been good. Last year they experimented with self service breakfasts which didn't really work out, and breakfast is now served to order. Much work has been carried out over the last year or so with accomodation. Although only one date is available to display for 2010, I stayed at The Melrose in February, June and November, and will return next month. Nothing is ever perfect but The Melrose, in my book offers a good value, friendly, clean stay.

i spent a night at the melrose last weekend after a long drive from the north east. the couple who owned it were very welcoming especially as i was on my own. i am allergic to cats but this wasn't a problem for me as my bedroom was perfectly clean and altho it was allowed in the sitting room iv had more sneezes from peoples houses from dust! people must remember that a bed and breakfast business is someone's home as well and people do have pets. i personally loved the homely feel, was offered a cup of hot chocolate in the lounge despite my own facilities in my room. they were keen to attend to my needs and were of great help in planning my route and finding the location i needed to be at the next day. bedroom was traditionally decorated simple but very adequate and clean. bed was very comfortable and i got a very good sleep. breakfast was lovely and dining area was nice and bright. overall a lovely stay for under 30 pounds i felt guilty only paying that at the end for the personal service i received

Room was dirty. Wallpaper hanging off wall. Damp and dirty patches on ceiling, room smelt fusty. Bathroom floor was dirty.

Dining room was cramped. All the breakfasts were cooked in advance, and food was kept luke warm in warming trays. There was no choice just rubbery fried eggs.(no scrambled poached or boiled ) If you did not get down to the dining room by the dot of 8 o clock everything runs out. You then have to wait for more eggs to be cooked by which time something else has run out.

Asked for more coffee but pot was never refilled.

Please dont ask for a second sausage you will be asked "isn't one enought"

Cat roaming aroung everywhere, even in the dining room while you are trying to eat your breakfast and queue for the warming pans.

The cat was actually sitting right on the top stair on the second flight as we came out of our room on day of departure, my husband had a bag in each hand and a cat that insisted that it was not moving. This is so dangerous and I would not recommed anyone with children even attemp the 2 flights of steep stairs.

The "car park" is round the back and has room for 4 cars only. You have to carry bags from car, up gravel driveway, along road by side of guest house and in front door then up stairs. The room smelt and there was a large brown stain on ceiling .The shower was dirty and got hairs in the tray. The washhand basin also had hairs in it.There was a large fluffy cat that roamed everywhere we had to shut doors or it was in room. The cushions on the chairs had cat hairs on.Breakfast room looked cramped. My son so allergic to cats he coughs and is sick so we could not and did not want to stay there!!! My son hated it and cheered when we left.Ended up paying twice as we went onto a far better hotel to try to salvage something of our weekend away.

There was a large furry cat which was roaming everywhere in the Hotel - two of our family are allergic - we weren't told it was there. When we said about it the landlady said "well, you'll have to keep your doors shut, after all if you were staying in a Premier Hotel you wouldn't keep your doors open! (No, maybe not, but then there wouldn't be a cat to roam everywhere even in the dining room and kitchen!)
One room had a large damp patch and smelt "funny" - the shower tray and the wash basin were dirty - on being told the landlady wiped it round with the teatowel she had in her hand when this was reported!
We were told to be down to breakfast early or "the eggs would be rubbery as I only cook once and leave everything to keep hot"!
The shower in the second room was impossible to control - either scalding hot or freezing cold. The wall paper in this room was coming off the walls and there was a layer of dirt under the radiator.
By the time we had experienced the hot/cold shower we had had enough and decided to leave - so we booked in at another hotel (this was beautiful) and left on the excuse we had a family crisis - we did have one - The Melrose!!!
