Reviewed February 25, 2014

A newspaper offer of "third night for £20" made this a £35 pppn break for half-board. Last room on the first floor, so no-one stumbling past at 1 a.m. Comfortable, large, and warm, but no light at the writing desk :-(.
Food very good (scrambled egg excepted), portions modest, but very adequate. Expected litle variety at dinner for the price, but the table-de-hote menu changed every night, and there was something attractive on all three nights. I only wish I'd had fish on Friday!
Almost everyone was on the right side of 60, and of a quiet disposition, so very peaceful mealtimes. We avoided the "sea" end of the dining room, which was served by the wind/kite surfing enthusiast who was always ready to discuss the day's surfing.
We were able to park free on the road in front of the hotel, which might have been a little fortunate. We only realised the advantages of the Coast Hopper too late to use it.
Main outing was to Titchwell Marsh RSPB, which was as good as ever. If you aren't in the RSPB, use the bus - entry to the reserve is free, and the cafe is good value.
Of the avaialble churches we went to the Union Church, which can be seen from the hotel doors (look just to the left of the theatre, beyond the bus station). Congregation mainly older, but with families as well, and a young minister who seems to have the gift of reaching all ages. Skilful use of the "children's talk" to get a message to the adults!
Would we go again? For sure, yes.

Room Tip: I suspect that rooms on the first floor at the front (i.e., over the public bar) could be disturbed...

This was the first building to be completed in the Victorian development of "New Hunstanton".
It still stands in pride of place overlooking the green, the war memorial and the formal flowerbeds.
It caters, these days, for coach parties and clients of a certain age looking for a comfortable, mid-market getaway.
A little faded, perhaps, but clean and spacious. The food in the restaurant is fine, but you wouldn't make a journey here for the cuisine. The dishes often were only vaguely recognizable from the menu. The young serving staff were friendly and helpful.
A fire alarm, and evacuation, at 4am was followed by another minutes afterwards. No explanation or apology was offered the next day. The helpful daily briefing, delivered to bedroom doors before breakfast, might have been a suitable medium for this. Or indeed the letter sent to our home on our return, urging us to book again, We gathered that the cause was the exceptionally strong wind.

Room Tip: A sea view will cost extra. Our room, 113, had a spacious bay with easy chairs.

Thank you for your review. I am so sorry that the fire alarms went off during the night; this is not a normal occurrence. It does indeed appear that it was the exceptionally high winds that caused them to go off. I have passed your comments onto the kitchen regarding your thoughts about our menu. Once again I am sorry for the inconvenience caused by the fire alarms sounding. Regards, Zoe.

Booked last minute and got good rate. Needed short break not too far from home - this was ideal. Hotel in good location and easy to access at this time of year. Parking easy and walking or driving are easy from here to a very interesting beach walk (for miles if you like) and get coastal hopper back, or travel in car towards Cromer and enjoy the Norfolk coastal road. Hotel is clean and tidy and very quiet - good bar and sitting area. Room was more than adequate although radiator did not work (this was not reported by ourselves) so managed with heat from bathroom - good view accross green and sea. Bed was not good, felt like going to roll out!! Room insulation very good. Quietest hotel ever stayed in!!! Breakfast adequate.

We have just returned from a 3 night break at the Golden Lion. We spotted the hotel on a previous visit to Norfolk but the mediocre reviews and it being a Shearings hotel put us off a bit however now with good reviews the outstanding location seemed perfect for a winter break in Norfolk. The rooms are very comfortable and clean although a bit dated and ours had a brilliant sea view. The food was very good and the staff are very helpful and efficient. Being so close to the sea, shops etc. it would be ideal for a summer break however the atmosphere was excellent in January and we look forward to another stay there.

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra for a sea view room

The position of the hotel is excellent with a great outlook as usual there was a group of fourteen of us. The hotel has an excellent outlook across the green to the seafront which is very good for walking along.
The town is also a few minutes away.
Kings Lynn is worth a visit a very nice place and plenty to see and do. Sandringham Palace is a short drive away and both places are connected by a bus service from Hunstanton bus station 5 minuets walk from the hotel.
There are plenty of places to eat out if required.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annexe to the back of hotel have sloping ceilings and not a lot of headroom when you ge...
