We are new residents of North Norfolk and had heard good things about Byfords from a local resident. This week we had some business in Holt and parked our car in the pay-and-display car park next to Bakers & Larners department store at 4:20 p.m. and paid for an hour of parking, although the ticket only printed out a time of 5 p.m. We didn't think anything of it. Upon returning, we saw our car was inaccessible behind a closed metal gate, which was chained and bolted for the evening. There was no telephone number to call to have the car released. Only after the car was locked in for the night did we notice a sign stating that the car park is locked at 5:15 p.m. and there was nothing we could do. What a great welcome to Holt! Thanks, Bakers and Larners! Oh, and our house keys were locked in the car too.
Our new home is more than 10 miles away from Holt, so we decided to consider our options while having a drink across the road at Byfords. We actually had a dinner reservation somewhere else but now didn't have any way to get there. We mentioned our inconvenient situation to Byfords' manager, whose name is Orest, and he was immediately welcoming and sympathetic and brought us a complimentary beverage. We had been really hacked off by Bakers & Larners' parking policy when we arrived and were souring on our otherwise pleasant visit to Holt, but Orest's kind gesture and warm welcome salvaged our evening in Holt.
I phoned to cancel our dinner reservation at the pub where we originally intended to dine and explained that our car was inadvertently impounded for the night in Holt. The man on the other end of the phone line immediately said, "Oh, is that at Bakers & Larners? That happens all the time." Well done, Bakers & Larners, you've earned yourselves a reputation.
We stayed for dinner at Byfords, and all the staff were extremely friendly and efficient. The food was tasty too and the menu had a number of interesting options, some with a Moroccan twist, which we enjoyed. We ended up taking a taxi home (and, fortunately, finding a spare set of door keys) and another taxi back to Holt in the morning to collect our car after the gate opened.
Thanks, Orest and team, for your kindness, great food and service, which turned an annoying situation around for us. We had a great evening at Byfords and will be back.
