Enjoyed our afternoon tea at Byfords with good fresh sandwich's and very good little scones. The cake selection was a little cobbled together and disappointing for a restaurant of this quality, and made the whole thing a bit sweet. Not unusual ofcourse - we love afternoon tea but always prefer those that are a little more savory.
Sadly a bit let down by the service - it was a busy day, but our food arrived with no tea, which only came when asked for, with minimal apologies - not very good at all.
We will certainly return, but probably when Holt is less busy.

When you think Holt, you think Byfords. (And you think Gresham). Byfords is a cafe/restaurant with B&B. We took friends there to eat. Olde worlde. A certain type of person likes to be seen there! Fish fingers elsewhere is 'posh fish fingers' at Byfords. And it is - and you pay for it. We wanted to experience Holt and felt we should go to Byfords. Now we've done it, but will probably choose one of the pub restaurants next time.

We have always liked Byfords since we moved to Norfolk and when we lived in Sheringham we used to pop over for a coffee and a cake and it never let us down.

As we hadn't been here for a while decided to go for a nice drive and have a spot of lunch.

The setting is great, lots of old beams and good seating.

I had mussels and frites with a latte and my wife had Linguine with a pot of Earl Grey.

The food was delicious and definitely freshly cooked. The sauce the mussels were in was out of this world and packed full of flavour. I was assured the linguine was equally as good.

The portions were of an excellent size! So much so I didn't have any room for their wonderful cakes.

Service was fantastic, polite and attentive staff really add to the enjoyment of a meal.

The bill was £32 which for what we had and the quality of it was really good value for money.

If you're in the area then we'd really recommend you seek this gem out.

We visited early evening for dinner with our 18 month old, seated straight away on one of the last remaining tables in the areas that were open. Some sections of the restaurant were closed until later in the evening. The pews we had to sit on were very narrow and quite uncomfy, but allowed us to have a highchair in a good position. Whilst the table wasn't ideal for comfort, the food was really good. To start we ordered some of the sharing dishes - chicken wings, falafels, posh fish fingers and special of the day pork ribs. All of them were yummy, especially the ribs which our son loved too. For main I had sesame and peppercorn crust seared tuna steak with jersey royals and asparagus and my husband had beef 3 ways (steak, a pasty and shepherds pie)with mash. Both meals were really yummy and well cooked. The tuna had no pink which was perfect for me,and my husband commented that the shepeherds pie was particularly meaty. Our son had a cheese and tomato pizza, which looked and tasted nice, he was just too tired and grumpy to eat it! We also had beers and soft drinks on the bill, which came to £60. The staff were really really friendly and helpful, and cheerfully brought straws and crayons to amuse our son. They also made a real effort to talk and play with him, and didn't mind him wandering around the closed off sections of the restaurant. All in all a lovely meal

On first impressions of the venue and menu, we were really looking forward to our lunch, we ordered the seafood platter for two, this consisted of prawn and crayfish cocktail, posh fish fingers, smoked salmon and crispy coated squid, accompanied with a jalapeno tartare sauce. The majority of the food was okay but the squid was totally overcooked and inedible. When the waitress came over to ask if everything had been okay, I told her that the squid had been overcooked and tough, to which she replied "I will let the kitchen know"! The waitress returned within 30 seconds with our bill but never made any further comment about the squid or indeed made any attempt to offer recompense for the poor quality food that we had paid for but could not eat. I left this establishment feeling totally undervalued as a paying customer and therefore will not be returning
