“Disappointment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2012

The pub / restaurant is part of the group which includes The Mad Moose, The Wildebeest and Mackintosh's Canteen, all in around Norwich, with good reputations and good in my experience. We therefore went to the Hunny Bell with high expectations. We were disappointed.
We arrived to find we were the only customers, were not offered the dining room and sat instead in the bar where we were joined by by few other people later. No atmosphere. However, it was mid week in November in rural Norfolk so we were not unduly upset, looking forward to lunch.
What a disappointment! Apart from the venison which was obviously freshly prepared and cooked, most of the other dishes; starters, mains and puds were pre-prepared and heated in the microwave. The chicken pie was served in one of those awful dishes which sits on the plate amongst the vegetables, topped with a separate flaky pastry lid, obviously added at the last minute. And to accompany this were "seasonal green vegetables"; they turned out to be fine green beans, not seasonal for Norfolk in November, more likely from Kenya.
One person ran the bar and served everything; he was struggling to cope.
The bill was not small and this was not the good value for money which can be found in many Norfolk pubs. We are not planning to return in the near future.

“Disappointing return to this country pub and restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2012

As a family ( 2 seniors, 2 children and their parents) we visited the Hunny Bell last Autumn whilst staying on a family holiday in Norfolk. the food was great - locally sourced sea food, a variety of tasty dishes and good service meant we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Upon our return, recently, ( a year later than our first visit) and expecting the same quality of locally sourced food and quality, we were greatly disappointed - the menu had barely changed in a year and some of our meals were bland. My husband and I (the 'seniors') chose the chicken and mushroom pie with a puff pastry topping which was pretty flavourless and mediocre. The accompanying mash was similarly very bland, (it appeared to have a skin on it which possibly meant that it had been plated up and left for some time) and the sauce in the pie was thin and gruel-like. The sea food platters and mussels were as last year, however - fresh and well cooked. The waitress who served us was the same one as last year and she was excellent - she was on her own managing a large number of diners and was pleasant, helpful and unphased by the amount of work she had to do.
We really are not sure that we will return to The Hunny Bell if we stay in the North Norfolk area again.

“Really very good indeed.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

Having moved to Norfolk 12 years ago< i can honestly say that I love the place and kind find almost no fault with living here. Except that it's almost impossible to get good food anywhere. Whilst there are a few good restaurants in Norwich, once out in the country you'll find a choice between pubs doing poor, over-priced food or poor, resonably priced food. Ocasionally you'll find one doing really poor food in either catagory, but you won't find many doing good food at any price. The exception to this rule is The Hunny Bell. The food is really good - well cooked, well seasoned and well presented. The menu has been different each time we've visited and there are daily specials too. It may not be cheap (OK, it isn't cheap) but for food of this standard you could pay a lot more in a major city - and you can't compare it with Norfolk, because I've yet to find anywhere else as good. There is a good range of well-kept real ale and this is a locals pub as well as a gastro pub so the atmosphere is relaxed and genuine too. It's not often I can't find fault with an eaterie, but this is one such time. Excellent.

“Excellent country inn”

Perfect spot just a few miles out of Holt. Food is great. Eat in the bar as the atmosphere is nicer than the barn restaurant.
