Really enjoyed our stay here! The family room was perfect with a separate area for our little boys travel cot (which was provided). We used the hotel to get to the GNR and stayed the night next to it. Was fantastic location for this - we went to East Bolden metro parked easily for free and got the metro to the haymarket and back from south shields at the end of the race!

Food wise - plenty of choice at breakfast and fresh food regularly brought out. We did not eat or drink in the evening at the hotel but visited the next village about 1 mile away Heighanton where there are two very hospitable pub/restaurants reasonably priced home cooked family friendly pubs. (The Bay Horse and George and Dragon)

Overall perfect weekend.

we stayed at this hotel over the bank holiday weekend as part of a sight seeing weekend, when we arrived the sight of the grounds where outstanding!!! we had a room in the new block and it was very nice and comfortable. the shower was amazing, we ate one night in the hotel which was very busy, but nice we had a bit of a wait but understandable. breakfast on the morning was defiantly a busy affair, buffet style, but wow there was a lot! we asked one of the waitresses for some advise on where to go, and NATALIE was extremely helpful, she advised beamish which was fab, she took the time to get there, what kind of things where there and even where we could eat while we were there, this was very helpful and I thought was very kind of her to take the time to do this as i could see they were all very busy! so in all if you want a lovely old country hotel, with lovely beds and staff like Natalie to stay in while you go to beamish then this is the place!!!

The rooms in the old wing are nice but mine lacked simple things like soap in the bathroom. For the price you expect more attention to detail. The restaurant is overpriced - I can see what they're going for but a very uninspiring dining room with cheap cutlery (for £25 a head I expect better than school canteen cutlery) and meals that were okay mean you leave feeling cheated. The staff mean well but with an internal phone chirping the whole way through dinner and a few large parties in attendance they were battling the tide. The gym is very good, the grounds are lovely but it needs to give you a bit more of they're going to charge £100 plus without breakfast.

Dear Guest

Thanks very much for your feedback, there is much in it that is positive, and we are grateful to you for all your comments.

There is a mixture of modern and traditional throught the hotel, and the dining rooom also reflects the changing character of the building. I'm sorry you did not like our cutlery. it is standard in many 4 star hotels.

I do hope that you will allow us to be of service to you again at some stage in the future.

We weren't expecting a huge amount after reading some reviews but for the price we paid it was perfectly OK. I think people need to bear in mind what they pay and you generally get what you pay for. We had our two dogs with us and upgraded to an enormous family room so plenty of room for dog beds etc. It was on the 4th floor but there's a lift so that's fine. The décor and furniture was a bit tired but not everything can be brand new all the time. Bathroom was small and a bit tatty but perfectly adequate.

There were three weddings on the day we arrived and check in was a bit chaotic but we were pleased with the service at dinner and the food was fine. Not amazing but not awful either. During the week we had coach tours staying so the restaurant and bar were very busy but the staff dealt with things well. Special mentions to Katie (think it was Katie - restaurant supervisor) and Charlotte (one of the waitresses) who were lovely and stayed calm and helpful throughout with some quite demanding customers.

I had a spa treatment which was lovely, husband used the gym which he said was good.

Lovely grounds for taking dogs out night and morning and great walks in the area.

We've paid a lot more for worse and given how busy it was we might have had to complain a lot more than we did (once when we waited for wine for dinner).

Room Tip: Family rooms are large, separate sitting area and bedroom. On the 4th floor but there's a lift...

Went to the hotel for 4 nights mid week as part of a coach trip. For the price, the hotel was good, with large rooms and good grounds. Staff were very friendly but seriously undermanned in the dining room.
Food was adequate for a set menu, but could have been more imaginative. As I said, staff were friendly, but very rushed resulting in having to go to the bar ourselves rather than wait.
Breakfast was O K but again, shortage of staff meant that items on the buffet were not replaced On the last day no museli, eggs, yoghurt, bread, or mushrooms available without asking for the dishes to be replenished.,also delays in coffee being served on first sitting down
The Hotel was very clean and rooms well maintaned,, but a little tired. Not enough coat hangers as usual.
Would probably go again, but would avoid the restaurant if had own transport

Room Tip: room sizes did vary, but ask for room overlooking grounds.

Stayed here for a wedding in September 2013.

The deluxe double room was extremely comfortable, modern furnishings and superb bathroom and most importantly I did not have to limbo to have a shower.

My father booked a standard single room and the difference compared to our deluxe double was dramatic ... the single was in major need of a make-over.

The breakfast had a reasonable choice however the porridge even though tasty, was extremely thick almost to the point where you had to cut the mixture from the serving spoon with a knife.

The food during the wedding was also acceptable however the panna cotta had a similar consistency to the porridge.

The staff throughout our entire stay could not have been more helpful ... nothing was too much trouble.

The rates for the rooms appeared to fluctuate quite a bit when compared with other guests in our party, so it is worth checking this, in particular when using so called special discount codes offered to members of the wedding party. For some guests it was cheaper to book online through 3rd party sites.

Room Tip: Opt for the deluxe.
