“Best all round hotel we've stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2013

Exceptionally pleasant and welcoming staff. The restaurant prices are better than most similar hotels with good quality food from a very varied menu. The web site menu doesn't show the extensive daily list of specials which, when added to the "static" menu, provided enough variety for us to be spoiled for choice on three consecutive nights. We'll happily go back!

If your're travelling up or down the A1 and need to stop for the night, don't both with Scotch Corner (grotty Travelodge and expensive Holiday Inn), since at the next junction to the north there is the Aston Hotel.

The location is unpromising, with a Macdonalds, a petrol station and a lorry park just in front of it and not much within walking distance, but the hotel itself is comfortable, well-maintained (due a refurb soon) and has a half-decent restaurant ('59') attached.

The bathrooms contain shower and loo with the wash basin in an alcove between the bathroom and bedroom proper, which is an unusual arrangement. However, the shower cubicle has a decent ledge which you can put your toiletries on and also wash your feet without having to stand on one leg! You can even sit on it if you feel the need.

Staff were extremely friendly and prepared to spend time discussing places to eat, even though they made it clear we would be missing out if we didn't use their own restaurant!

The price is slightly under Premier Inn for a comparable experience.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep with the window open, ask for a room facing away from the A1

Thank you for placing your review i am pleased to read that you found the hotel comfortable and well maintained. Our location is for ease of access from the A1(M) and also for the surrounding areas.
The design layout of the bedroom is a talking point, it is good that you found the power shower cubicle seat of good use. Without having to stand on one leg!
The staff will advise and are knowledgable about the area, to try and help with the wealth of places to visit while here.
We hope that you return and soon.

Having been here on a business trip with a fellow colleague, this Hotel was booked for us by our partners we visited. Being really away from anything, the sole purpose was that it was near the company we visited. I really had doubts about a Hotel besides a highway and far from anything but a McDonalds and a Petrol-station, but I must admit to have been pleasantly surprised. The rooms are clean and well catered for. We had dinner on the first night in the restaurant and I was surprised to find a wide variety and even exotic dishes on the menu. The portions where plentiful and absolutely delicious!
We also took the buffet breakfast option every day and it was also the better type. Nothing outstanding, but everything was fresh and they had quickly refilled anything that was running low...again compliments to the staff!
Also the free WiFi connection and free internet service was a great plus! Fast and reliable connection during our stay.

There are only 2 cons I can say:
1, The place is really out in the middle of nowhere, so unless you arrive with your own car, be prepared to have a petrol-station as your only target for sightseeing.
2, We left on Saturday morning early for the airport, and we where surprised to find that on the weekends breakfast only starts after 8am. Pretty strange thing for a Hotel catering for usually transiting passengers.

My wife booked us in for 2 nights here as it had an offer on giving 2 nights with upgrade to an executive room, 3 course Dinner for 2 the first night with a bottle of wine thrown in (food was marvellous and plenty of it), Breakfast both mornings(buffet style as much as you can eat) and complimentary tickets to Beamish museum(excellent day out would highly recommend a visit). All for under £160. BARGAIN.. The room was great as were the staff very friendly and helpful. The only negatives I had were the TV is too small for the size of the room and the bed wasn't very comfortable(2 singles pushed together don't in my book class as a kingsize which the hotel states you get!!) But beside this we had a great stay...Would we stay again :- YES Would we recommend to friends :- DEFINITELY. The hotel is just off the A1 but the noise was very minimal the executive rooms seem to be furthest away, from our room we couldn't hear anything.

Room Tip: If you wish to stay here I would recommend looking for the 2 night offers here they are really good...

Thank you for placing your "ASTON"ishing review, it is great to read that you found the food to your liking.
We are ideally placed for visiting the area, there are so many places to see. I can recommend Durham Cathedral for your next viist or Bowes museum.
I have passed on your comments and they were very well received by the team. Good news too, all our T.V's have now been replaced with new 33" screen T.V's. We now have over 140 channels!!
Thank you for recommending us and we do hope you return and soon.

Not a country manor house, but you know this when you book, however a superb location for a few days touring, within sight of the A1, but take this as a plus not a minus.our room 1st floor overlooked the A1, but even with the window open at night this is not a problem.
Check in was very efficient (we had booked a two day deal with Travelzoo) our room was very clean with modern fittings and one of the best showers we have used in any hotel, sink in the bedroom itself which at first we thought a bit strange, however this works very well and I am sure other hotels could learn from this idea.
We ate in the restaurant on both nights, food is good menu offers a fair selection, again breakfast is good with a reasonable choice ,yes we have stayed in hotels were both the choice and quality were better, but not at anywhere near the prices on offer at the Aston. We have also stayed were the food was far from as good but at much higher prices.
What really stands out about this hotel is the staff, without exception they are excellent, nothing appears to much trouble, they are a credit to the management team.
We would have no hesitation in staying at the Ashton again
However beware the exit sleeping policeman if you drive a car with low ground clearance, even at a very low speed you can just scrape the top.

Thank you for your review after staying with us. Our location is definitely easy access being just off junction 59 of the A1(M).
The hotel benefits from triple glazing to ensure you a good nights sleep. The food we serve in Brasserie 59 is predominantly homemade, so pleased you enjoyed your meals whilst with us.
Your comments have been passed on and we are thrilled, I am very proud of the hotel and team here at Darlington.
Sorry to read that you found the exit ramp too high, i am not too sure what could be done with this but i will look at it.
We look forward to seeing you again and very soon.
