Hamsterley Forest is one of County Durham's most popular visitor destinations. There is plenty to do around this delightful 2000 hectare oasis. You can explore on foot, the walking trails will take you right into the heart of the forest for some spectacular wildlife watching opportunities. Explore by bike, Hamsterley is one of the top destinations for mountain biking in Northern England. Explore by horse riding, miles of waymarked horse riding trails through the high forest. Lots of events are always on, try out, Den Building, it's family fun; build a forest den and find out how waterproof it is. Easter Egg Trail, find Colourful Wooden Eggs to solve the Easter puzzle. Bushcrafts Survival Day, an introduction to the basics for survival: shelter, fire, food & water, plus lots more for you & your family to enjoy.

Whether you're looking for a nice easy cycle along a fire road or a challenging climb followed by an exhilarating down hill ride, Hamsterley has got it all. The forest is huge and has a wide variety of trails to suit all abilities. There are some excellent sections of red route which incorporate lots of nice technical features such as berms, drops and the bombholes at the end of section 13 are my favourite. It can be difficult to find the best trails unless you are with someone who knows their way around as the forest is huge. You can download a map from the website and if that doesn't help just stop and ask someone. The bikers you find around the place are usually more than happy to help.

The cafe in the visitors centre is fantastic and they are more than used to people coming in splattered with mud. They do the best cakes and scones. Well worth a visit.

What a place to visit when it is snowing and you want to blow the cobwebs away. Part of God's Own Earth. And ther ewere very few folks out braving the weather. Nice pub in Wolsingham, the Black Bull, for a freshly cooked meal served with a big smile and friendly chat.

Good walking along well posted paths. Beware of midges at any time of the year. Beware however of marauding cyclists although this may have been tightened up since my last visit.
