“Special Evening at Gruvelagaret”
Review of Gruvelageret

Gruvelageret
Ranked #1 of 17 Restaurants in Longyearbyen
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $61 - $146
Description: Gruvelageret AS is location at a historical part of Longyearbyen in a former warehouse for the mining company. The interior represents 100 years of coal mining at Svalbard, and the kitchen focuses on arctic cuisine. We want to show you the history of Svalbard and Longyearbyen, combined with good food and beverage in a nice atmosphere right beneath the Longyear glacier. NB! We have problems with the location on TripAdvisor since we are not part of the road network. Please look at our website on how to find us.

Exceptional food and warm and welcoming service. Not to be missed! Take a taxi from town and enjoy a leisurely stroll down hill after dinner. Kristin Mork was attentive to every detail, starting with our reservation.

Ranked #1 in TripAdvisor, probably Svalbard’s closest to a Michelin starred restaurant. Way out of village up the valley, the paved road even runs out (taxi needed). In the chic coal miner cabin style a single room in an old building with a variety of table sizes; very cosy and warm with views of the valley. Set menu of 4-5 courses, no choice (tho they were happy to produce vege versions for our two vegetarians). Food very good, beautifully presented and flavorful; delicate yet filling. Reasonable wine list pricewise relative to other local venues (eg Funken Lodge) was very fairly priced. They have a decent whisky selection too. All in all a very impressive offering and excellent dining experience. Highly recommended. As we left waiting for the taxi, we spotted an antlered male and female reindeer a ways down the hill eating the rough tussocks of arctic grass. All a bit unique.

The Gruvelageret Restaurant is a small, very intimate and high standard restaurant serving farm and sea to table food with a very innovative menu and great presentation. The atmosphere, based on the town's mining history, is cozy and cabin-like with only a few tables, with friendly and attentive service by candle light.

The set menu included a wonderful white bean and reindeer heart soup, a delicious arctic reindeer taco, butter-seared halibut, followed by strawberry profiteroles and with some nice amuse-bouches in between.

Well worth booking in advance since there is very limited seating. The setting is beautiful as well on the top of the side of a mountain, so plan on a short taxi ride up and you might enjoy a nice stroll back to town after dinner, as we did, walking back to our lodging in town in Longyearbeyen.

Four courses set menu (but flexible if you ask to change sonething). Top level. Extreme care for the smalleat detail, from homemade bread to arctic burrito to incredible profiterol\zabaion dessert. Soup with vegerables and reindeer heart superbe. You need to be patient as it takes quite long. Expensive, but worth

We had a great dinner, and got great historical interpretation from our server. Definitely worth a trip. Be sure to bring your camera, as the place is full of relics from the coal mining days.
