“Not worthy of the Radisson name”
Reviewed August 11, 2012 via mobile

Ridiculously expensive and poor service. Having the 'captive audience' of weary cruise ship travelers camping out in your lobby for up to 8 hours waiting for a room does not add to the ambience of this place. Avoid the apartments if you are a couple as they offer a bunk bed bedroom & a fold out double bed couch which is as comfortable as one would expect. Breakfast good but the rest is poor. Most of the other hotels are similarly priced & strangely decored so it maybe the best of a bad bunch.

Well, Norway is expensive and Longyearbyen is a good example. Visitors here are typically for a day or two in between a flight and a cruise so the hotels can really charge what they want as there is no option. So even though we paid a lot for a room here we felt we did OK. We ended up with a room in "the apartments", maybe because we paid top-dollar, and it was very nice. The room was large, with a desk and a couch. There are also rooms in what appear to be regular hotel rooms. Bring an eye mask as the curtains kept out about half the light and since the sun is up 24 hrs in summer here the room was always pretty bright. They have a lounge / bar that offered pub-type lunch and supper. The breakfast buffet was fabulous.

While here, definitely visit the excellent museum, and take a walk down the road to the dog sled pens. They offer dog sled rides on wheeled vehicles which we did not do but they looked like a blast.

Room Tip: The instant you confirm a cruise or any other visit to Longyearbyen, get a room lined up.

A very good comfortable hotel, run with minimal staff. As one would expect for a hotel at the 78th parallel. Excellent food. Comfortable surrounds. Longyearbyen is a tiny town, and I would love to come back here in the winter.

The bus from the airport stops outside the hotel which is in a central position between the main street with its few shops and the museum which is worth visiting, although Longyearbyen is not a big place! Most staff I spoke to were helpful and friendly, there is free internet in the hallway, a small hotel shop selling souvenirs and clothes etc. and a dark bar with good bar food which is more reasonable than the expensive dinner in the restaurant. When the sun shines there are seats outside with reindeer skins on them which are lovely and warm to sit on while enjoying a beer!

I didn't notice at first the request to remove shoes when entering but after that I found it no problem. Rooms were adequate and functional but I do think the windows could have more of a blackout given the permanent daylight in mid-summer ... comfortable bed though.

If you want to buy alcohol (except wine) at the supermarket remember to take your flight ticket or boarding pass with you to be stamped as there are restrictions on its sale. Also don't forget there is rabies around.

Room Tip: Some rooms are below ground level and look out onto a bank and a not very good view. Higher up room...

Not much choice in Longyearbyen! The common areas are very nice but rooms seem like they were made from a prefabricated boxes (probably were) and are not what you would expect at Radisson. Still not bad for such an outpost and staff were helpful!
Given the white nights of June, the curtains are very poor and short as well. Rooms can never not be boxes, but they could fix the curtians to proper block out ones
The menu has whale meat on it which may be traditional but is not polictically very correct.

Room Tip: Take a good eye mask in summer!

We went to Svlabard in end of september and even tough it was cold it was still stunningly beautful. We would actulaly consider living there for some years if we could find some decent jobs. the hotel is good and provides fine service, specially when you consider the location. The prices are high but that is understandable.
The staff was mostly good but i think amnagement coudl improve on few details, like maintenance. But overall a good hotel.
