Take a couple of hours and read all of the displays as they are uniformly interesting. The displays are very nice. All in all, a must-see.

The museum encapsulates all that can be seen 'out there' in Svalbard, has interesting historical items, and many exhibits of wildlife. I've visited Longyearbyen twice now, and have been to the museum both times, finding it a great source of information. The book store is great too!

A really great example of a museum that portays well how life must have been in different periods. It really brought things to life that I didn't fully appreciate. Be warned that there is limited explantion in English on what you're seeing, but it is enough to get you by.

The shop is good but it really comes into its own for books and maps, things you just won't find anywhere else in town.

Shoes are not allowed inside but there are free lockers for storage of those and smaller backpacks.

The building housing the museum has a shop with books, etc, etc. These are cheaper than buying the same thing in the coop shop in town.
If you are going on a cruise round Svalbard I'd give the museum a miss as you will, hopefully, see the animals and birds displayed for real. You will also be given lectures on the history, geology, mammals, etc. So only pay to go round the museum if you are on your way home and you didn't get any of this stuff.
