Very tastefully done with good signage, many in English.

Yearendbyen has 2300 residents. It seems to be inhospitable, located 700Km north of Norway, treeless, barren, low temperatures in the winter and isolated.

This museum helps explains life in the largest/northernmost settlement in the world. Ecology, settlement, wildlife, economics are covered well enough that a visitors trying to gain his or her bearings can do so.

While few would make the trip for the museum, it is outstanding and beautiful for this location. ANd we are delighted we made the trip.

As long as you are there see the fine art gallery, one of the kennels where the huskies spend the summer and muse on what life is like in Yearendbyen. (The name of the town comes from a businessman who helped develop the coal industry there.)

Try to talk to some of the residents.

I am not a museum type of person when travelling, but I had been told that the Svalbard Museum was really worth a visit - and it was! We had a bad weather day and pushed our way through the snow storm down to the University area and Svalbard Museum just below the Radisson SAS hotel. The museum is not very big but their displays and information should be found interesting to all people coming to Svalbard. I mean - if you spend the time and going there, you must have some kind of interest of the place. They have the history of explorers that first came to Svalbard and the Antartic, wildlife, mining and trapper histories. You will find a beautiful stuffed ice bear, seals and other animals living in the area, if you just follow the "route" through the museum, you will end up feeling you have the best "tour of Svalbard" in a couple of hours time. This is definitely an attraction you shouldn't miss out on.

There are many museums in Norway but, this is one of very best!

Not many tourist attractions available In the small town like Longyearbyen but, this is very worth to visit for 2-3hrs after tour or lazy afternoon. You can learn much about arctic life, animals, industries which you never concern about. Very interesting! Most credit cards are acceptable for entrance and museum shop. You can take pictures inside so bring your camera if you want but, take your shoes off! ;-)
