It is quite a long tour, and it is of course dark and cold in the mine, so it requires a little exertion. But if you are interested in the history of Svalbard, it is fascinating. Our guide was very informative and safety-conscious. Recommended.

Listen, I am a bit clostrophobic, but I was fine. You dont have to go through the hole that is too small for you. A mandatory visit in the old mining society of Longyearbyen.

This is a good trip which culminates by walking 250 meters down into the mine. Its been left just as it was when the miners walked out. You do get overalls to were if you wish but not essential unless you want to crawl down the mock-up of a coal seam!

Visited Mine 3 on our first full day in Longyearbyen. Minibuses turned up right on time and the guide introduced herself and shook all of the visitors hands and welcomed us individually to the tour. A short journey from the hotel to the start of the tour was made safely with points of interest pointed out.
The mine tour was a very interesting one, made special by our guide who spoke excellent English and also had a wicked sense of humour.
The guide we had has no connection to the mining industry but her passion for the history of the mines shone through throughout the tour.
The crawl through the mine shaft is optional and the rest of the tour is through a fairly open area so no concerns around claustrophobia.
Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone of any age who has an interest in history.

We ended the holiday at Spitsbergen with the visit to the coal mine (and were dropped of at the airport afterwards). The miners left everything at the end of there shift an never came back. It gives a strange feeling but... also insight in how things worked. It is special to walk right into the coal seam and see all the equipment they used. Good for a few(2) hours.
