I decided to call in and visit the house not really knowing what to expect .... as it was only a couple of kilometres from the Ring of Kerry drive it was worthing having a look.
There was so much to see:
- the 300 year old house was owned by Daniel O'Connell. Daniel O'Connell; often referred to as The Liberator, or The Emancipator, was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century. (I'd never heard of him so the introductory video was a great start. It was interesting to look through the parts of the house that are open plus the Chapel.
- the gardens were excellent and well worth a stroll through
- there are a number of other walks including a walk to the beach which is close by.
It is managed by the Office of Public Works. The O'Connell family donated the property to the Irish Government in 1966. Cost to enter is 3Euro.
