I decided to call in and visit the house not really knowing what to expect .... as it was only a couple of kilometres from the Ring of Kerry drive it was worthing having a look.

There was so much to see:

- the 300 year old house was owned by Daniel O'Connell. Daniel O'Connell; often referred to as The Liberator, or The Emancipator, was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century. (I'd never heard of him so the introductory video was a great start. It was interesting to look through the parts of the house that are open plus the Chapel.
- the gardens were excellent and well worth a stroll through
- there are a number of other walks including a walk to the beach which is close by.

It is managed by the Office of Public Works. The O'Connell family donated the property to the Irish Government in 1966. Cost to enter is 3Euro.

Derrynane House and Gardens are a great place to visit. The surrounding woodland gardens are magical with gorgeous walks. Semi tropical trees, ferns and shrubs thrive in the mild, temperate gardens. A walk down to the dunes and Derrynane Beach are also a must!

The location of Derrynane House is beautiful. The property is very nice and fun to walk. The beach is a fun place to go on a nice day. The house is not so terrific. There is very little to see. You can't take photographs. I would save my money for Muckross house which is much nicer and much more to see. The road to the house is very windy and narrow.

Very historic location being the former home of "The Liberator". Excellent Audio-Visual giving the story of the giant of Irish history. The grounds surrounding the house are well maintained by the OPW and well worth a stroll around.
