“Gus does Koutouloufari”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2012

This is quite an old review, we went last year, I just haven't got round to reviewing it until now.

Lovely setting for a resort in a beautiful location. The village of Koutouloufari is just stunning. Cobbled streets, lovely shops, huge range of restaurants. Glorious. If you want more lively activities head down the hill and after a 10 minute walk you are at the beach with all sorts of fun activities.

Ok, so that's the good bit. On arrival we given our key and pointed in the direction of our studio. The studios are awful. Ours was filthy, mouldy and damaged. When we pointed out the damage we were advised that some Dutch lads had been fighting and smashed the door in. That's ok then, we won't bother repairing the damage, they did flick a mop round though. The studio was very small and basic. How they can say that it's self catering is beyond me. There was a cooker which in time did heat up a bit. We also had a spoon and a couple of plates. That was it.

The staff are without question the rudest I have ever encountered and reading through reviews I am heartened that it's not just us. The woman who seems to do everything including glaring, refusing to serve drinks and snapping at people is the same person who is cited elsewhere as having other unpleasant habits. So rude! Yanis was also very rude, here's an example:-

initially our apartment was cleaned every day, we were there for a fortnight and during the holiday the cleaning became less regular. During the second week we went about 4 days without any cleaning and of course this meant 4 days without toilet roll replenishment. We could have gone out and bought some, but each day we hoped that the room would have been cleaned. On one day we returned from a day out to find that the room hadn't been cleaned and sadly this meant that our bathmat, which was actually a towel torn in half was still sodden due to a rather erratic shower. I made the critical mistake of putting it outside to dry in the sunshine. An error! Yanis and the woman later approached us and demanded to know why we had put the bathmat out. When I replied that it was to dry it as it would never have dried in the bathroom, I was told that it wasn't wet! Quite why I would spend my holiday putting out dry bathmats to dry I'm not quite sure. They were furious with me. With hindsight perhaps this wasn't the best time to point out that the room hadn't been cleaned for 4 days and we were perilously short of toilet paper. We were told that had we booked a bigger apartment then we could have expected better cleaning and sufficient toilet rolls. Don't recall reading that in the brochure but it was the typical of the way in which guests seemed to be being treated.

Another couple who were on their honeymoon had been told that they could expect a nice complimentary bottle of something to celebrate their wedding. Imagine their surprise when the woman turned up at their door with a nice cold bottle of water!! Their rudeness made for great hilarity amongst the few Brits staying at this time, it was almost worth putting up with it.

So, would I recommend this place? No, sadly I wouldn't which is a shame as it's in a beautiful location. I would recommend the resort, it really is glorious but there are other hotels/apartments to choose from. I would actually go a step further, whatever you do, do not book this resort. The accommodation is very basic, it doesn't offer self catering facilities and never in my whole life have I experienced such rude people. Everything was too much trouble. It seemed that everyone was getting the same treatment. Truly shocking. Don't go!!

The staff may have changed of course as this is an old review. But, If you arrive and there is a woman with long black hair squeezed into clothes a couple of sizes too small, glaring at you, brandishing a key to hurl in your direction, be afraid, be very afraid, it's HER!!

This really isn't 4* at all. Yanis, the barman is a very sweet man, who is extremely helpful and hard working. The bar and pool area are kept clean and do the job. Food is also okay - greek salad is very good and they have a good choice of soft and alcoholic drinks.
However, the receptionist is truly SHOCKING! Neither myself or my parent could understand how on earth she has this position. We have never met a more incompetent person. She is rude, lazy, and her service was despicable - she is a disgrace to her profession.
The actual apartment was okay. Not great. I would say 2* to 3* at the most! Not 4* in the slightest. Very basis room, to be honest I was quite disappointed. We had to pay for aircon and safe, but to be fair that is stated when booking the holiday. Had enough stuff to cook with, and fridge was fine, so that was a plus. Shower was awful, no hot water unless it was at about 11am! Wouldn't return to these apartments.
The location itself was brilliant. The is a beach about 15/20 minutes down the road (not star beach!) which is nice and quiet and had some decent tarvena's. Up the road is the beautiful village of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano which offers fantastic bars, restaurants and lovely people. I would most definitely go back to this part of Crete, but I would never ever stay at sylvia apartments - nor would I recommend it. If you have booked a holiday there, it is not the end of the world but do not have high hopes and remember the apartment surrounds some beautiful scenery and there are plenty of opportunities to go on some brilliant trips.

The rating of service I would give for Yanis would be very good, but due to the receptionist being so so bad I have had to rate it as terrible.

Silvia apartment and hotel is not at all a bad choice for the value of money that we paid for. We were a group of 7 people, each of us paid around 30-40e per night, for 2 apartments which were spacious enough for 4 people. The rooms were basic, there's a kitchen and cooking stuff that are ok to make a decent breakfast. The surrounding of the hotel is very nice, lots of trees and flowers, couple of fountains which makes it look like a resort... The pool is really nice too, if you swim around 4-5pm, there's almost no one inside the pool and just couple of ppl sittin' by the pool.

The only downside of the stay is that they dont change towels and refill toilet paper, which we have to ask at the reception.

Unlike many bad reviews specifically about the female receptionist in incredibly white shorts, we really enjoyed the fact that she was running the whole business. She turned out to be very helpful and responsible. We were just a few minutes late for the pick up bus back to the airport to leave Crete and the bus left without calling us. She immediately called the agency and managed to get to the bus driver, shoutin on the phone and forced him to drive back to pick us up again... We thought we had to call taxis to Iraklion airport which could be very expensive for 7 people... But with her help, we could get there on time. So thanks to her!!!

So in general, we enjoyed our stay at Silvia very much!

Room Tip: ask for second floor rooms, u'll get ocean view!

Myself and my boyfriend, decided to book a fun week away in Crete with two of our friends. We researched a lot of accommodation, and after seeing some great photos of Silvia apartments we decided to book here for a week. After all it did say that it was a four star hotel so we were very much looking forward to some 4 star treatment.

Disappointing, was the word of the holiday. when we arrived we were given a key to our room. (we arrived at night and were not shown to our rooms, just expected to find it, and considering the complex is quite big it proved quite difficult).

We were instantly hit by the smell of damp, it smelt like no one had aired that room in years. The worst was about to come. When we walked into the bedroom we were greeted by large wires sticking out of the floor!!!!! then to top it off we walked into the small bathroom to find wires also sticking out of the floor. Im not being funny but what a health hazard. When you took a shower, the water didn't stay in the shower cubicle it went all over the floor, heading towards the wires!

The apartment also didn't have any windows, just shutter doors in the bedroom. But you couldn't have them open when you were sleeping otherwise people would be able to walk straight into your room- again not very safe. so instead we had to pay 5 euros a day for air conditioning.

If you like a nice cup of coffee and a chilled breakfast in the morning around the pool- forget it. you will be greeted by loud dance music in the early hours that continues throughout the whole day!

The owner of the hotel is an interesting lady. I don't want to seem rude but she was not welcoming and wore outfits that were far to revealing for someone of her size. There was one instance when we saw her sat by the hotel bar picking at her crotch area.

The area the hotel is in is quite nice, if you go further up the hill there is a very nice village with lovely bars and restaurants, but the local beach is called star beach- with no beach just foam parties etc- perfect for single 18 year olds.

If you are looking for 1/2 star accommodation and you don't mind running the risk of being electrocuted then go for it, but this was not what we booked or payed for. So much so that we had to end up booking into another hotel for our finally two nights. If you want a great stay for an affordable price then go to 'Hotel galaxy' up the road!

Room Tip: research! read reviews and dont always believe that the photos the hotel are supplying on their webs...

I must stress that this hotel is ok if you are paying for and expecting 2 star. If you are looking for somewhere with basic accommodation and you get a cheap price then go for it as it is clean.
Unfortunately for us however, we were told by low cost holidays that Silvia Apartments were 4 star and even the manageress says so!!
We were very disappointed as we paid £411 for a weeks holiday.
Here's why it is not a four star;
The rooms are incredibly basic, we had specifically requested a double bed for me and my girlfriend but we got two single beds pushed together. I've had this before in 2 star places. The beds were hard too, we didn't get a good nights sleep. There was mould on the shower tiles, the tap dripped annoyingly and so we closed the bathroom & bedroom door when in bed as not to hear it, there were clean towels and sheets only once in our week stay (not 4 star), no replacement toilet roll and no washing up liquid or kettle. Had to use pan to heat water for coffee. My brother & his girlfriend's room had wires sticking out of their bedroom floor. They were so unhappy with their room that they checked into a REAL 4 star place up the road for the last two nights.
The manageress was bad but amusing too, she came into our room to give us the air conditioning key and after telling how it worked, she walked out without looking us in the eyes or saying bye. Also we saw her sat openly at the bar one day plucking out her pubic hair from under her shorts. Must have been fixing her bikini line. Not a pretty sight as she is a large women who wears hot pants. Subjective I know.
Below I've given service a 3 as Yanish the bar man was nice.
Disappointed and won't be going back.

Stayed in silvia apartments for one week, we stayed in a studio apartment which was basic but functional, take a kettle and a sandwich toaster as you will not get much use out of the two poor cooking rings! arrived at around 2pm to find our room wasnt ready which i found a bit strange! After reading the reviews about the 'rowdy' dutch, they werent as bad as people make out, they just enjoyed their holiday like anyone else. Pool area nice and yannis the bar man is very helpful, will do whatever he can for you! Unlike the lazy manageress and those shocking white shorts! If your english she will probably seem to have a problem with you! A short walk up the hill is nice at night some really nice restaurants, and if you walk down the hill it gets abit more lively, around a 15 minute walk! Would definately go back!

Room Tip: one bed apartment, studio possibly abit too basic!

Bearing in mind we only paid £500 pounds for us both to go (flights, transfers and accommodation) we were not sure what to expect. We read some reviews from people who had stayed here and were a bit dubious. The room was basic, but clean. Towels were changed 3 times in the week, terrace overlooked to the sea, kettle, kitchenettes, hairdryer, ample space in the rooms and local amenities were not too far!
We would recommend using the Manos Supermarket at the bottom of the hill, the one at the top of the hill is ok for morning bread and pastries etc but very expensive for other stuff.
The manageress was very helpful, some one has commented that she is either in the bar and pool area or lying down in reception. THE FACT IS SHE'S ALWAYS THERE, In 40 degree heat I would probably do the same. She works from 6am til 1 am, can that be a good thing?, we loved it. Perfect location so the night life is there if you need it but your not in the middle if it all! Will defiantly go back there. Yannis the bar man could not do enough for you and the little village of Koutofoutari is beautiful.
