having read the reviews of this hotel, i cannot understand what people are looking for in a holliday that was obviously booked as we did, of the internet (through imperial travel) at a very competative price.

upon arrival we found the reception staff to be very helpful and could not do enough for us. the room was more than adequate with stunning views over the bay.

whilst the food may not have been to everybody's taste, there was always plenty of it and as a buffet service you could eat as much as you like.

the staff in the resteraunt were very approachable and friendly as were the staff that ran the lunchtime buffet. whilst the hotel was obviously catoring for other europian citezins, we found with the price that we payed, you could not fault the quality of food, or indeed service.

the apartments are elevated as clearly stated prior to booking, but do afford quite stunning views over the bay of hersonisos.

we had resevations about booking of the internet, and after reading some of the reviews prior to taking our holliday thay gave us cause for concern. these proved to be totally unfounded having travelled to many greek islands and indeed crete before, we would thoroughly recommend this for anyone seeking a low budget all inclusive get away.

After reading the reports about the hotel we were not looking forward to going, but we think the other people must have been at a different hotel. We found the staff friendly and helpfull, the rooms were clean and spacious (not an ant in sight). The pool was always clean. The food was great with always a choice of meat , fish, pasta or salad, it never looked dried up and was constantly replenished , the breakfast was also varied , not just a continental breakfast . Free drinks were available all day up to 11.00pm then you had to pay, but everyone was advised of this so cant understand how you can complain. It was lovely sitting on the terrace in the evening with fabulous views over the bay enjoying a drink and a chat with the other guests ( who were a total mixture of German, Dutch, Italian, French and English ). We had a lovely time with no problems and would recommend this hotel.

I have to say, that after reading the bad reviews about this hotel on this & other websites, I was not looking forward to my break at all. How wrong could I have been? I don’t know what some people expect on holiday but, let me assure you – if you’ve booked to go here please ignore all the bad reviews. I do have to agree, though, that this is more of a three star than four star hotel.
There were certainly a huge amount of Germans there, but also French, Dutch, Spanish and Greek. As an English person I certainly didn’t feel like a second class citizen – everyone was treated equal and the staff all spoke English. You are in a foreign country – expect foreigners!!!!!

Accommodation: The room was fine (actually, exactly like the one in the hotel website picture.) It was cleaned everyday – and towels replaced as and when necessary. The air conditioning and fridge were free of charge. There was a safety deposit box which was payable at hotel.
Food: Breakfast and evening meals were served in the restaurant – self service buffet-style. Lunch was also buffet-style on the terrace by the pool. There was always at least one meat dish and fish. There were also always potatoes, vegetables, pasta, rice and all the usual salad things (only had chips once). Only criticism of breakfast was there was never any bacon. I have a very plain eating teenager who thought the food was great. If you are a family who thrive on junk food then this isn’t the place for you. There was always ample staff clearing and re-laying tables.
Drinks: Having just re-read some of the other reviews, it sounds as if the hotel has slightly changed the way it serves drinks. Throughout the day all the drinks are self service by the pool. You can help yourself to as much beer, wine, raki, ouzo, brandy, water and other soft drinks as you can manage. Tea and coffee is also served twice a day by a barman (cakes in the afternoon). Drinks in the restaurant are also self service (unless you wish to buy a different bottle of wine). In the evening there was always two staff to serve from the bar. There was a notice up which said that they only served one drink to each customer at any time. We were, however, never stopped from one of us collecting all the drinks for our family – and there was never a long queue.
Location: Hotel is up a hill – so views are stunning. The walk to the closest beach is obviously uphill on the way back – but you don’t have to be a mountain goat to climb it! (As suggested in other reviews). The walk into the centre on an evening was a pleasant walk – but did take about 20-25mins (longer on way back since it was uphill).
Entertainment: There isn’t any evening entertainment provided (but the hotel doesn’t make any claims that there is). There was one BBQ and a Greek dancing evening which you had to pay for during our two weeks. Lots of people sat around playing cards enjoying family time together. During the day I think there was a mini club (didn’t use it ‘cos kids too old), and sporting games are organised. Water polo was on most days which was great and encouraged people to mix. The lad who ran the sports activities always made a point of asking everyone if they wanted to join in – and funnily enough, the only language he didn’t speak was German.
All in all this was great value for money. All anyone can do is speak as they find – and we found it a great place.

We were extremely disappointed with our stay at the Pefana Village Hotel. It was definitely the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The facilities were limited, poor air conditioning, small, basic bedroom, no entertainment, self service for drinks in the daytime. The food had little variety, all buffet service and the same for every meal every day. Very little choice of anything, no British food at all, continental breakfasts, limited choice even there! We ate out of the hotel on a number of occasions as the food was so monotonous, predictable and basic. Set in an isolated position we had to get a taxi if we wanted to go anywhere else, too far to walk into Hersoissos in the heat, even on pre-booked trips as pick ups were from another hotel about half a mile away! The two pools were small and full of young men playing ball games, no chance for anyone to swim leisurely.
There was only a skeleton staff on duty all the time, the bar staff were unhelpful and reluctant to do anything at all except lounge behind the "bar", are they happy in their jobs? I think not! The reception staff were generally helpful and did their best but were limited in their understanding of English. The walk to the small beach was ok, albeit a bit steep but needed a ski lift on the return. All in all, it totally ruined our holiday, even the elctricity and water went off at one stage, first thing in the morning, no water to wash with and no air conditioning when most needed. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone! Definitely more orientated towards German and Dutch tourists than Brits! Don't go there!

Arrived ar Pefana Vilalge around midnight on 6th July 2006. Was impressed that we were offered something to eat as we had missed dinner. This hotel is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties as it is built on a steep incline, however the views were spectacular - our room overlooked the bay of Hersonissos. The complex is very pretty and resembles a typical greek village with white washed 2 storey buildings and crazy paved paths lined with palm trees and flower beds. The food was ok, but became a bit boring towards the end of the week. Breakfast and dinner are served in the main restuarant buffet style. Lunch in the snack bar by the pool - didn't like this set up as it involved long queues - found it was best to leave lunch until about 1.30pm. The alcoholic drinks included in the all inclusive option are very limited - brandy, rakki, ouzo, wine and beer (vodka is also available but is not advertised as as such - so ask for it!) The staff are lovely and very helpful. If I were to give this hotel a star rating I would say it is a 3*. We enjoyed our week in Hersonissos - plenty of shops, restaurants and bars but wouldn't stay at this hotel again.

I am writing this review 1 day after returning from this hotel to let everyone else know the truth about this terrible hotel, personally i think the first review was written by the owners!

Please read on if you are even considering it!

This is definately German run, full of and set up for Germans, and they do not like the English!

We arived in the hotel expecting 4 star all inclusive quality, as it is claimed to have here is the truth:

LOCATION

Absolute joke, it is claimed to have a 150M walk to the beach, it has a 300M drop to the beach! The hotel is situated a good 40 min walk down steep gradients before you get to the town, or shops, and a 10 min walk down a gravel track to get to a small beach miles from anything. Walking back up is not for the faint hearted, we are only 23 and fit, and still found it extremely difficult to manage.

ALL INCLUSIVE

One thing this hotel is not is all inclusive, you have very limited breakfast and lunch, mostly re-heated from the night before, and dinner is set up for Germans, as an English couple we didnt know what we were eating and led us to eat out 13 nights out of 14! Drink is poor quality, and extremely limited, Ouzo Rhaki and Brandy(all watered down were all drinks available) with limited mixers. Desert was so small you could barely see it and you could not help yourself, staff serving food again only spoke german and were extremely rude.

ENTERTAINMENT

Well in 2 weeks we had 2 nights of entertainment..........and if we wanted to asee it.....15Euros! you could go out for that! during the day the entertainment was non existent, we saw water polo once in 2 weeks, just not acceptable!

STAFF

Where are they? All staff we saw on reception were unco-operative, unhelpfull and really rude, no people skills and no communication skills in English, just german! Last day we argued about keeping our room and got no-where, 13 days in hotel instead of 14, unacceptable entirely! Dinner staff could not understand simple english and were rude and ignored all English, not just ourselves

ROOM

Extremely basic, with a fridge, tv (all German channels) and air con its only good points, cleaners worked through the night to get new guests in and kept us awake from 7 onwards. cleaned everyday but beds were like rocks and had very few good nights sleep, ended up asleep by hotel pool one night to get a decent nights sleep. 3 calls home of about 4 mins each cost 24 euros, and they wouldnt let us stay in the room on the last day without paying.

OVERALL

Hotel completely ruined our holiday and we spent over £1000 trying to make the most of it by keeping away from the hotel.

We met other couples while out on holiday and saw there hotels and trust me, spend a bit more and go to anywhere but here, other fantastic hotels were the grand hotel, the creta maris and the albatros, all were a million times nicee than ours and had much better facilities etc. Trust me go elsewhere! Avoid this place like the plague!

Hopefully this will stop other people like us ending up in an awful place.....We hope otheres will agree ad add their HONEST opinions.

We had never been to Crete before and we loved it. The hotel was brilliant the staff were all very helpful and charming. Jannis and Anna the bar staff were great.

The hotel is German owned apparently so it is mainly German with few other English, when we were there, but the staff especialy Anna and Jannis speak good English.

It is on a hill so it is not for people with walking difficulties, but saying that we both have knee problems and copied easily. And there are always Taxi's!!

We cannot recommend this enough, we hope to go back in October.
